The Anatomic Pathology Department in the Veterinary Medical Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville is recruiting for a Lab Manager for the Histology Laboratory.
This position performs all duties in a functional histology laboratory related to diagnostic histology. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Gross examination of and trimming samples with residents.
2. Embedding, cutting, staining, cover clipping and labeling slides submitted to the service from both the surgical pathology and necropsy services.
3. Participates in the production of specific special stains as requested by the professional service faculty and residents.
4. Performs quality control on slides produced by the laboratory, including routine and special stains and
immunohistochemistry.
5. Uses and maintains automated staining equipment including automated processors, tissue stainers,
coverslippers and immunohistochemistry stainers. This includes troubleshooting problems in both staining
protocols and the operation of the equipment. Ensures equipment is used and maintained according to the
manufactures guidelines.
6. Supervises the overall operation including providing accurate oversight and approval of time worked and
reported. Train staff on the proper use of equipment and basic histology skills. Ensures that adequate supplies are available daily and orders are placed in a consistent and efficient manner.
7. Performs immunohistochemical stains utilizing automated stainer. Incumbent has primary responsibility for developing, troubleshooting and performing immunohistochemistry.
Preferred qualifications:
1. In-depth knowledge of all aspects of histology including tissues of veterinary species.
2. Advanced skills in the use of various automated histology equipment.
3. Attention to detail and an above average ability to maintain accurate lab records and to handle data
efficiently.
4. Ability to direct, evaluate and train others. Previous experience as a supervisor or manager in a diagnostic setting preferred.
5. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
6. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees, professional staff and residents.
7. A minimum of five years of appropriate experience in a diagnostic histology setting.
8. Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable with taking a leadership role.
9. Familiarity with the companies providing relevant reagents and equipment for these techniques and have experience contacting technical services at those companies to facilitate optimal assay performance.
