The Department of Curriculum and Teaching in the School of Education, Health and Human Services invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Science Education to begin September, 2010. Primary responsibilities include teaching K-12 undergraduate and graduate science education courses, directing the secondary science program and teaching courses as part of a Teaching and Learning doctoral sequence.  Courses are primarily taught on site with integration of technology and some distance learning experiences. Other responsibilities include: advising of students, collaborating with College of Arts and Science faculty and collaborating with K-12 educators in the New York/Long Island metropolitan area.


 


Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to engage in a scholarly research program which includes publishing research and external funding activities. Participation in professional organizations and service related activities that support teacher education is expected.


 


Qualifications: An earned doctorate from an accredited university in Science Education or a related discipline. A strong content background in science and education as well as a commitment to diversity is necessary. The candidate must document that s/he is a certified teacher in the content area and has a minimum of three years secondary school teaching experience. Strong teaching ability and establishing or continuing a scholarly research program and service are essential.


 


The Department: The Department of Curriculum and Teaching consists of 22 full-time faculty, and offers an Ed.D. degree in teaching and learning and Master of Arts and Master of Science in Education degrees in elementary and secondary education, addressing subject content areas across the disciplines. Our faculty also works with undergraduate students preparing to teach in elementary and secondary schools. The mission of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching describes our goals for preparing reflective scholar-practitioners who can create socially just, democratic classrooms in which teaching and learning unfold within an ethic of care, with diverse students participating equitably and intellectually as citizens of the classroom community.
