General Summary:
The Instrument and Controls (I&C) Technician is responsible for the repair of all instruments, control systems and electrical equipments in the associated facilities. The I&C Technician performs work of high skill in the testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all electronic and electric equipment and systems.
Primary Functions:
- Perform preventive maintenance duties on all major equipment and emergency backup systems.
- Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment.
- Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability inventories.
- Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance record.
- Inspect, repair, install and remove various types of Power Plant Instrumentation, Micro-processor and Programmable Logic Control Systems, motors, generators, transfer control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and work with electrical systems up to and including 4160 volts.
- Complete other tasks as requested by the Maintenance Manager.
Scope of Responsibility:
- The I&C Technician operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given.
- Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.
- The I&C Technician encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.
- The I&C Technician must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times.
- The I&C Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provides suggestions for plant improvements.
- The I&C Technician must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
- All employees have the responsibility to both the Company and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure their customer's needs are being met.
Working Relationships:
The I&C Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager, works in cooperation with the operating utility on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant and responds to direction from the Plant Director in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 75 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
- Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will routinely be required.
- All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
- Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
- Graduation from an accredited Instrument Technician Program and two years work experience as a technician in a related industry desirable.
- Four years work experience as a technician with increasing responsibility in a related industry may be substituted for the above requirement.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique I&C problems is desirable.
- Must be able to work from blueprints.
- Must be skilled in the use of hand and power driven tools.
- Must successfully complete an I&C test.
- Must have excellent organizational skills.
- Experience in working with voltages up to 4160 volts highly desired.
