Intern - Govt Affairs (part time)

SUPERVALU has an internship opportunity for undergraduate level students in our Government Affairs Department. This part-time, paid internship will provide candidates a diverse and challenging role where they will be able to learn practical work experience through research, writing and communicating with employees at all levels of the organization. This 12-week position is expected to begin in January of 2009, with potential to go longer.

The Government Affairs intern will contribute to the following projects:


Help track legislation in states where SUPERVALU has grocery stores


Monitor one to two federal legislative issues


Perform functions such as elected official correspondence, researching issues to maintain web content on SUPERVALU website, database projects, and drafting content for written materials


Produce research for public policy issues or compliance matters


Help produce and update materials used by government affairs with elected officials


Update SUPERVALU government affairs website


Help write and produce quarterly newsletter


 Assist with company-wide government affairs outreach activities


Represent SUPERVALU at external events 


Assist with event planning, including events for candidates, elected officials and invited speakers 


Job Qualifications:


Currently enrolled in an undergraduate level program in Political Science, Business or related discipline 


Have an interest in government affairs and some knowledge of the legislative process


Self-starter, motivated and able to seek results


Ability to take projects from concept to inception


Must possess strong research and writing skills


 Ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple assignments


Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite


 Articulate, thoughtful and effective communicator with a wide range of people at all levels of an organization 


Must be able to effectively make cold calls


Demonstrated ability to handle conflict in a mature manner


Ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment
