Job Description


This position is responsible for leveraging Global Procurement’s Supplier Performance & Innovation (SP&I ) methods to ensure timely, robust development and implementation of supplier performance management programs with designated R&D suppliers.  The role is also responsible for defining and implementing global and or, regional aspects of category strategy in designated supply markets.  Both SP&I and Category Strategy efforts are key to delivery of Takeda’s R&D business strategy and broad supplier value delivery (compliance, quality, service, cost, innovation).

The position will lead Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) programmes with key sub-category suppliers using Takeda’s Supplier Performance and Innovation (SP&I) methodology.  Key deliverables include delivery of and maximize Takeda’s value from the supplier relationship.  Specifically, successful SRM will deliver supplier innovation from breakthrough collaboration, and demand management resulting in year-on-year reductions in the cost of business  The incumbent will take direction primarily from the relevant Global Category Leader in this regard.

Through the application of rigorous Category Management tools, systems and techniques, the incumbent will deliver operational and financial value in line with the agreed functional and business goals.  Working with the relevant Global Category Manager, the role will define global category strategies that reflect Japan supply market and Takeda business needs. In some circumstances, the incumbent will directly lead global category strategy.   Once defined, the incumbent will drive implementation of category strategies, whether global or regional, ensuring delivery of agreed business and category objectives. In all cases, the position proactively leads sourcing initiatives to support the delivery of R&D procurement targets, including savings, cash-flow improvement, and supplier performance and innovation.

The position is responsible for ensuring Takeda’s global R&D business objectives and strategy are met and accounted for in Global Procurement’s strategies, plans and activities.  The incumbent will hence be a key contributor both to the Japan and global R&D organization.



  • Establish robust and sustainable category strategies and supplier partnerships ensuring value delivery against Takeda’s business objectives.
  • Plan and execute strategic sourcing initiatives, including but not limited to supplier consolidation and transformational outsourcing. 
  • Establish supplier performance and innovation management programs for key R&D suppliers in collaboration with R&D leadership and the Global Procurement SP&I team
  • Within the established SP&I programs, monitor the appropriate KPIs facilitating issue diagnosis & management processes where indicated and facilitate issue diagnosis & management processes,
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation while ensuring compliance, and improving efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key business partners while working closely with Global Category Lead and Managers, as well as key R&D stakeholders.
  • Maintain an understanding of the challenges of the organization and awareness of Takeda’s future direction and business challenges to successfully adapt/improve the strategies, structures and approaches required to cost-effectively support Takeda’s evolving R&D needs.

Category Management Accountabilities

  • Collate supplier, market, category and internal business data and information for R&D cluster in scope, and provide in-depth input and validation to the regional Category Strategy, including facilitating involvement of senior stakeholders. Using this as a basis, develop R&D cluster specific strategies and communicate and distribute to a large network of procurement and senior business stakeholders. Strategies developed will be scalable and aligned appropriately across Takeda Operating Companies and functions.
  • Provide sub-category input to inform the top-down target setting process and take responsibility for the delivery of significant savings targets following engagement in the target setting process.
  • Develop a pipeline of R&D cluster category initiatives and opportunities (Savings / Productivity / Risk Management / Innovation) required to meet significant targets using external supply market / business intelligence, application of benchmarking methodologies and internal business partner knowledge. This process may include management and coordination of specialist suppliers on market intelligence data.
  • Provide input into the development of the Annual Category Plan based on the sub-category strategy, business planning activities and sub-category pipeline and ensure these are staffed and executed in a timely basis in line with targeted goals. This will involve management and development of allocated project managers in the deployment of projects.
  • Provide sub-category input into the development of the Category Management Handbook to translate the Category Strategy and Annual Category Plan into clear, practical guidance for key procurement and functional colleagues and ensure that category associates involved in operational buying activities have access to the Category Management Handbook.
  • Liaise with the regional procurement hubs and the business to ensure the generation of monthly metrics reports:
    • Delivery of and accurate reporting of Procurement Balanced Scorecard measures and  Value Contribution targets (operational metrics, savings, quality etc.) achieved from implemented sourcing strategies
    • Contract volumes and associated statistics by sub-category, geography and function, as appropriate
  • Work with the required functions or other areas within Procurement (e.g. Process & Systems) to support programs to deliver spend accuracy in the covered sub-category area in line with agreed goals.


Supplier Performance & Innovation Accountabilities

  • Ensure a robust approach to Supplier Performance and Innovation (SP&I) and lead (sub-)category specific SP&I projects, supported by members of the SP&I team:
    • Provide input into the overall category supplier segmentation to identify key supplier relationships within the sub-category, with whom regular business supported reviews will be undertaken to at a minimum ensure delivery to expectations and target value over and above the contracted value via areas such as Innovations.
    • Establish value creation targets with key suppliers within the sub-category
    • Determine and implement consistent Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) graded by level of segmentation and associated supplier performance review schedules
    • Oversee reporting of supplier performance against goals
    • Collate supplier information and feedback from countries, functions, sites, category teams and Business Partners
    • Ensure sub-category contractual arrangements incorporate compliance and performance against KPIs
    • Ensure negotiated contracts are clearly communicated and applied across the sub-category
    • Ensure that any supplier performance risks and issues are resolved on a timely basis to end user satisfaction

Non-category Accountabilities

  • Develop strong working relationship with key business stakeholders and general administrative functions (e.g. GMS,Finance, Legal, Regulatory, CMSO, Strategy) to ensure appropriate input to partnership programmes to deliver corporate procurement goals.
  • Be the single point of contact for senior stakeholder relating category strategy initiatives in Japan
  • Work with the required functions or other areas within Procurement (e.g. Process & Systems) to support programmes to deliver spend accuracy in the covered sub-category area in line with agreed goals.

People Accountabilities

  • Train and coach procurement staff (and project related resources as appropriate)
  • Utilise the category specific escalation process to ensure that internal issues related to the category performance are addressed and resolved in a timely manner

Administrative Accountabilities

  • Follow the defined process to ensure contracts developed in the category strategy effectively implemented at a global, regional and local level (as needed) including both terms and conditions and sign off procedures
  • Ensure annual operating activities are undertaken within the allocated budget and provide timely reporting to the Global Category Lead / Japan Lead as required by collaboration with Global Category Manager



  • Bachelors degree
  • 5+ years in-depth strategic and operational procurement experience
  • 10+ years overall business experience
  • Demonstrated success leading teams (Global / Regional) to achieving documented savings through various sourcing strategies
  • Proven Financial and Business Acumen (e.g. TCO, TEI, NPV& Cost Modeling)
  • Outstanding communication and project management capabilities
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and complexity
  • Change management and process improvement skills with direct experience in delivering business process change
  • Strategic thinker with solid facilitation ability supported by excellent interpersonal competencies (communication, leadership, influencing)
  • Proven capability in negotiation, conflict resolution and stakeholder management
  • Ability to manage effectively in a global, fluid, interactive, matrix environment

  • MBA
  • Management Consulting experience
  • Analytical experience in positions of increasing analytical complexity, autonomy and responsibility. Demonstrated ability in organizing, analyzing and reporting complex financial data with solid grounding in basic procurement and financial processes and systems.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry experience (Experience of Category Management / Sourcing Management of Cell Therapy / Biologics under GMP is strongly preferred)
  • Supply base market knowledge of Cell Therapy / Biologics (Japan based)


  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. International travel will be required.
  • Requires approximately less than  approximately 10%  international travel (Quartery).
