A Java Architect in Systems Architecture will help define technology for reusable products and shared services for the enterprise by working with various IT and business groups to identify key technical challenges, and provide the architecture solutions.
The candidate will build a thorough understanding of the products and services supported by Systems Architecture, as well those used in many other areas of Walgreens IT. Where existing technical capabilities can be applied, you will work with other development teams in Walgreens to help them effectively use the shared services.
You will be expected to perform following functions as part of this role:
- architect, design and maintain the shared services used across the enterprise
- support the services and help other development teams effectively use these services
- manage monitor and report to the management about the service and relevant information of interest related to it
- evaluate commercial and open source products for specific needs
- integrate with other services in the enterprise
- work with and coordinate with various different teams in the enterprise focusing on both internal service management teams as well as end users of the services
- document system capabilities from technical and business perspective
- troubleshoot functional or performance issues, determine corrective action, and see to the resolution of the issue while minimizing the impact on production and development environments.

Looking for candidates with 5 or more years experience in information technology and software development. Must have held a role equivalent to Senior Engineer or a Java/J2EE Architect for enterprise-scale, J2EE based products or solutions evaluations and support. Candidates must have working knowledge of and first-hand experience with the following.
- Experience with Spring & other open source Java frameworks
- JavaSE 5, JavaEE 1.4 concepts, knowledge and API
- Object Oriented Analysis and Design
- UML & Design Patterns
- First hand experience with Java development, object oriented design.
- Various application architecture paradigms, (Client-Server, n-tier applications, SOA, other)
- Strong understanding of concepts and hands-on experience with JDBC, Web Services, Messaging/JMS, JMX, etc
- Experience with J2EE application servers, preferably with WebSphere application server
- Proficient with tools (RAD/Eclipse, WebSphere/Tomcat, Subversion)
- Ability to present complex technical solutions and architectures in either formal or informal settings.
- Proficient in creating technical documents such as tutorials, manuals, and guidelines.
- Candidate should be able to work with consultants, developers and other project stakeholders (as necessary)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are required in order to be able to concisely present/document technical concepts and issues to a varied audience.
- Experience with enterprise single sign on systems, LDAP is a desired, but not required.
