Position Description
This position is for an entry level Linux Administrator in the Production SOA Team. You will work with senior architects, developers, database administrators and system administrators to learn to design, build, operate, and support the Coast Guard’s production Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solutions and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) infrastructure. You will also be part of the core 24x7 support team.
Responsibilities:
- Work with experienced team members and other technical professionals at the Operations Systems Center to install, debug, maintain, and document Linux Blade servers and Linux based XML Gateway Security appliances.
- Work with senior level architects, system administrators and developers and other teams throughout the Coast Guard to design develop, deploy and maintain secure SOA solutions using the Coast Guard’s Enterprise Service Bus and XML Gateway/Security Appliances
- Prepare detailed written instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Prepare, implement and maintain detailed configuration management standards and databases in support of SOA.
- Help to develop enterprise governance standards
- Create and maintain server and application monitoring software.
- Be a part of an on call rotation that does 24x7 monitoring, and be accessible via pager and/or cell phone.
Responsibilities & Desired Skills:
- 24/7 on-call rotation supporting 30+ servers in conjunction with the Production SOA team using an asynchronous message based Enterprise Service Bus
- 24/7 on-call rotation supporting Linux based XML Gateway/Security appliances
- Familiarity with Oracle and/or Sybase IQ dB environments.
- 0-3 years experience in a production Linux environment.
- Basic shell scripting / automation experience (bash, Perl, sed/awk, etc.) in LINUX/UNIX environment.
- Basic UNIX/Linux architecture, configuration implementation, monitoring, troubleshooting required - (RedHat Enterprise Linux preferred).
- SAN experience desirable.
- Veritas NetBackup / experience.
Supervisor(s): This position reports to both the Production SOA Functional Area Manager and the SOA Production Technical Lead
Required Education: BA, BS or equivalent practical experience as a Linux or Unix system administrator. (BS in Computer Science/Math/Engineering strongly preferred).

- Ability to plan, document, install and effectively implement complex server software across heterogeneous server and networking environments.
- Ability to diagnose server and network problems effectively to resolve issues.
- Ability to set goals and reliably achieve them.
- Ability to take initiative and proactively plan and deploy solutions.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent teamwork skills; ability to work closely with the architects, developers, database administrators and system & network administrators from a wide variety of Coast Guard business systems.
Miscellaneous Requirements
- Secret Clearance or ability to obtain.
- Background in security technologies such as single sign on, AD, Kerberos, SSL, SAML highly desirable.
- Java programming or Javascript/Groovy scripting a plus
- Basic knowledge of Java application servers and asynchronous messaging (JMS) in a high availability environment desirable.
- Basic Oracle and Sybase IQ dB knowledge is highly desirable in this position.
