GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY AND FUNCTION: The incumbent is primarily responsible for the development of new and/or modified manufacturing processes, equipment, and automation in support of projects undertaken by the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group. Projects will include both high consistency rubber and LSR products. The focus is on the development and implementation of lean manufacturing processes which are highly competitive in our industry. This position requires a keen awareness of best-practice processes and state-of-the-art equipment. This responsibility also includes providing inputs to support development of accurate manufacturing costs, allowing accurate financial analysis of new processes. The incumbent is a member of a highly experienced technical team. The effective exchange of technical ideas is critical. Because most applications will be new, the direction may not always be obvious. Innovative solutions utilizing good problem solving techniques and design of experiments to evaluate technical alternatives will be required. An in-depth knowledge of FNGP products, capabilities and processes is a must. Accurate and timely documentation is created and maintained as inputs and outputs of this development activity. RESPONSIBILITIES:
· To develop lean manufacturing processes for new and existing business
opportunities, including new and/or modified plant equipment and tools.
· Will include hands-on development of molds and cold runners. Will be responsible for the proper installation and running of new molds in order to evaluate the tool and to establish process parameters required to produce acceptable products. Will coordinate with tool engineers to improve and refine tools and processed where needed.
· Will supervise and direct a Process Engineering Technician in the set-up, running and evaluation of new tooling.
· Participate in “Process 3P’s” aimed at the development of new processes. Support with process concepts that meet the requirements of the team.
· Participate in the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process, leading the development of new, lean production processes and equipment to achieve a flawless production launch.
· To provide inputs to support the development of accurate and timely manufacturing processes/costs; assist in the creation new work center costs as needed for cost calculations.
· Create and maintain accurate engineering/process documentation such as Machine Specification Guidelines (MSG) and requests for quote for new and/or modified equipment; assist plant engineers with set-up instructions and Molding Specifications; Process Flow Diagrams and Process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (PFMEAs); and training documentation.
· Maintain adherence to Company policies, safety/ergonomic standards and good housekeeping practices.
· Understand and implement the health, safety, and environmental policies and to integrate health, safety, and environmental considerations into daily work activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· A Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science is required along with 2 to 5 years of related experience, preferably in transfer and injection rubber molding.
· A thorough, hands-on knowledge of modern injection molding machines and the ability to effectively develop and optimize processes on them is a must.
· Experience working with Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR).
· Working knowledge of rubber-to-metal adhesive systems is a plus.
· Good technical problem solving/analytical skills and mechanical aptitude are required.
· Experience in advanced engineering/statistical problem solving methods including Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Six Sigma Black Belt certification is a plus.
· Ability to create and maintain accurate Process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (PFMEA). A working knowledge of Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) is a plus.
· Ability to understand engineering drawings, tool designs, tool maintenance, compound characteristics, as well as transfer/injection press mechanics.
· Experience in the use of personal computers is required.
· Must exhibit good communication, project management, and interpersonal skills, and an ability to manage his/her own priorities and workload while working in a team environment.
