Will manage the Labor Relations function, including coaching and counseling, participate in contract negotiation activities, and provide day to day human resource support to employees at this operation with total employment over 2,000 and 1700 members in the bargaining unit. Individual must be able to lead teams to drive change and support the Human Resources strategy. Individual will at times report on progress of key performance objectives for this area of responsibility. The key issues are: building relationships, implement continuous improvement programs, and demonstrate the leadership abilities that would qualify this person to take over as Manager of HR. Must have recent experience within an union operation larger than 500 bargaining unit members since will have responsibilities for 1700 hourly in this position. The only candidate of interest will be someone who is perceived as being able to move into a department manager role in 2-3 years (see below). In this role, responsibilities include: • Provide HR generalist leadership and support to 2,000 employee workforce; responsible for 1700 hourly. Ensure consistent administration and interpretation of plant rules and policies. • Manage the coordination of all manpower movement including bids, layoffs, recalls, etc. • Ensure consistent HR practices, strategy and program execution throughout all levels of organization. • Coach and consult to provide strong performance management support to organization. • Provide consultation regarding employee relations issues, staffing/talent selection needs and training and development of staff. • Will handle grievances through all three steps. • Initiate and conduct timely investigations, prepare documentation and make recommendations for corrective/disciplinary actions. • Apply lean concepts to make process improvements to the HR function. • Maintain current knowledge of employment law and benefits. Support and interface with employee services to insure high level of customer service to the salaried and hourly workforce. Numerous skills come into play for this person and requires a high energy level person who is both flexible and will stand their grounds given the demands of a situation. One would not describe the union as hostile; hourly employment has grown significantly in the last 3-4 years. The union hourly personnel lead lean manufacturing initiatives and have been willing to adjust starting salaries. However, it is a large union environment and there are issues and challenges on an ongoing bases. Our client continues to have success as they have had for many years. This operation is ISO certified with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma having been applied for many years. Much of their success comes from producing cost effective, high quality products for the world market, research and development of new products, technology advancement along with lean mfg and six sigma. They have pioneered several revolutionary product designs and have led the industry with the products from this operation for about the last 15 years. Opportunities exist for advancement within the corporation (here or at other plants in the USA) because about 50% of managers and above across the corporation will be eligible for retirement in the next 3-5 years. REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor's degree. A major in business, human resources, psychology or related field preferred. • Minimum of 5-7 years related human resources generalist leadership experience, including a solid employee and labor relations background in an union operation with over 500 bargaining union members. • Demonstrate leadership abilities that would qualify you to take over as Mgr of HR. • Experience as “company spokesman" or key participant in contract negotiations. • General knowledge of the field of human resources including employment law, FMLA, ADA, and code of ethics. • Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills, including effective presentation skills. • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and HR systems. SAP or other HRIS systems experience a plus. • Lean/Six Sigma skills and/or training, or experience working in a Lean/Six Sigma manufacturing environment is a plus. No interest in anyone who: has made more than two jobs in last 5 years; has more than 12 years as a generalist/Labor Relations Mgr since that person if promotable would have already been promoted into an HR manager’s role and no interest in an Human Resource Manager or HR Director and no interest in anyone who has been unemployed for more than 9 months.
