Job Description

Manager, Quality

 

The GC GCMS Product Line sells approximately $100M a year of scientific instruments, parts and service, to pharmaceutical, manufacturing, semiconductor, research, university and industrial customers.  GC GCMS instruments are used, for example, to detect impurities in food, semiconductors, drinking water and blood. 


We are looking for a talented, dynamic leader with a strong background in quality, manufacturing principles, and leadership.  The Quality Manager will lead a small team at the Austin, TX site and interact with colleagues in a facility in Shanghai, China as well as around the world.  This is an excellent opportunity to leverage a career with the world leader in serving science:  Thermo Fisher Scientific offers many opportunities for long term personal and professional growth and development. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


To proactively manage the quality of GC products, accessories and spares and to manage and improve the quality systems used at the Austin and Milan sites with the objective of ensuring world class quality, world class customer satisfaction and a world class quality environment and culture.



To work with Product Management and R&D to ensure that quality considerations are built in at the design stage of new product developments.



To work with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to continually identify quality issues or potential quality issues in manufacturing and to develop and implement solution or preventative actions from these issues.



To work with the Sourcing and Purchasing teams and external suppliers to ensure the quality of our build materials is to our required standards and to continually track and feedback supplier quality and supplier quality issues.



To work with the Technical Support department to analyze and interpret quality related issues reported from the field and devise solutions to systematically resolve any faults or potential found.



To analyze and interpret CAS data from the field and use the analysis to proactively implant improvements to products or processes which will positively impact the CAS feedback for GC products.



To act as the single point of contact for the resolution of all quality matters



To manage and implement the processes involved in any critical quality or safety issues which arise in the field including communications and any recall process relevant to these issues.



To manage the quality management systems including, but not limited to, documentation control, internal/external audits and maintain accreditation certificates.



To provide key business metrics on quality related topics



Take part and manage product line specific practical process improvement (PPI) projects.


Specific Scope Data
The role is responsible for managing or contributing to all aspects of quality. This includes ensuring that our designs and manufacturing processes produce the highest possible quality scientific instruments and our internal quality systems are compliant for audits and regulatory bodies. 



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (engineering, business, quality or related) is required.  Master’s degree is d
esirable.



A minimum of five years experience of working within a product quality focused role in a manufacturing environment is
required.



A minimum of five years experience of managing quality systems required.



Experience working in a Six Sigma, PPI or a TQM manufacturing environment required.



A minimum of three years directly managing and developing employees, ideally in a related role required.



Experience working with a multinational, matrix structured organization strongly preferred.



Experience interacting with and/or overseeing quality in overseas sites strongly preferred.  Exposure to
manufacturing and quality programs in China is desirable. 



Experience of working with a broad range of people from manufacturing to senior management required.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions:



Accomplished written and oral communication skills



Must have a high level of customer focus and determination to deliver results to specified targets.  


Must be confident at multitasking in a fast moving environment.
