Position Summary
The manager of communications is responsible for the creation and implementation of internal and external communications initiatives that contribute to and support NERC’s goals, objectives and values. This individual is expected to work closely with and provide support to management with NERC’s various program areas. The manager of communications reports to the chief financial and administrative officer.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as single point of contact for media; provide background information to reporters; coordinate interviews with applicable staff; maintain media contact list.
Manage public relations: identify objectives; develop and execute outreach initiatives; write and edit articles for publication in trade press; write press releases; develop external messaging, executive remarks, and talking points.
Develop, execute, and track the effectiveness of NERC’s communications strategies, initiatives, campaigns and internal branding.
Create and manage content for NERC’s Web site, newsletter, webinars, workshops, bulletins, publications, and other media.
Review and edit key technical reports for messaging, direction, and clarity for non-technical audiences.
Support regulatory and legislative initiatives.
Foster relationships with key stakeholder communications staff.
Serve as member of crisis response team; must be on-call 24x7.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, seven to ten years experience in a communications or public relations environment, and energy industry experience.
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Ability to comprehend highly technical subject matter and translate it into layperson terms.
Working familiarity with Web site, webinar, and other corporate communications technologies.

Prior management experience a plus.
Extremely organized, hands-on, and detail-oriented. Able to manage multiple projects in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
Self-motivated. Able to work independently.
Resourceful. Ability to track down information, find solutions to problems, and identify and implement improvements to the communications program and process.
Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Excel. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash) and web programming languages a plus.
