MASTER MECHANIC (ELECTRICAL) - Valdez, AK

Crowley is looking for a master mechanic with knowledge of basic characteristics of vessel electrical systems to support a fleet of 16 vessels that support a world class ship escort and response system in one of the most beautiful and pristine marine environments.  The master mechanic will coach vessel engineering personnel and communicate with upper management and our customer regarding repair status.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs maintenance and repair on CMS Valdez owned and operated vessels to maintain service reliability. Works with all levels of operations management to ensure vessels remain response ready and reports repair status. Provides electrical troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs on board the vessels as necessary.

 

Acts as subject matter expert on EMD and Caterpillar engine maintenance and repair.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED required. 

 

Minimum of five years marine vessel mechanic or engineer experience with a working knowledge of marine propulsion, auxiliary systems and Coast Guard requirements.  Marine engineer or mechanic experience in the tug and barge industry experience is preferred.  Experience with EMD and Caterpillar engine maintenance and repair preferred.  

 

In addition to mechanical aspect this position requires professional knowledge of basic characteristics of vessel electrical systems such as voltage, generator KW, cable size and type, power distribution components, communications, alarm and monitoring systems, lighting and auxiliary support equipment on board the vessels based in Valdez.

 

Familiar with testing, diagnostic, repair equipment such as multi-meters, calipers, torque wrenches etc. Welding, fabricating and rigging skills would be a plus.

 

Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent technical decisions in order to make timely and effective repairs and maintenance. Computer literacy is a requirement with a working knowledge of word processing and to use the NS5 preventive maintenance database software.

 

Ability to work well with all levels of company personnel as candidate will be expected to coach vessel engineering personnel and communicate with upper management and customer regarding repair status.  Ability to adapt to changing work demands. Working knowledge of federal and state marine safety, health and environmental regulations.  Ability to handle field pressures, emergency response, and act as an initial responder to a vessel mechanical problem in a variety of crisis situations.  Ability to remain calm under extreme pressure.  Ability to board vessels, climb ladders and stairs, and enter hazardous areas, including enclosed/confined spaces, and wear respirators.  Ability to pass a commercial vehicle medical screening to drive Crowley's trucks.

 

Must have good verbal and writing skills with the ability to write reports and give status updates for all levels of the company as well as customers and regulators.
