Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer is involved in all aspects of designing mechanical components of the Command and Control & Digital Signage (CSBU) Business Unit products. The CSBU is focused on creating technology leverage across the company, re-establishing Planar as a technology innovator and providing support to business development activities in search of expanding Planers' participation in specialty displays. The Mechanical Engineer participates in the mechanical portion of CSBU product's conceptual design, CAD entry, prototyping and implementation into production. Additionally this engineer collaborates with other mechanical engineers to share best practices as well as partners with other CSBU engineers to ensure the aggressive business goals are met.

Essential Functions:

* Define new product concepts and ideas in conjunction with the Engineering team and other departmental stakeholders.
* Drive the development of conceptual mechanical ideas into realistic design targets and then through the development process into manufacturing production release including:
+ Ensuring that the mechanical design meets all product engineering specifications and third party listing requirements for thermal, shake/shock, transportation, EMC, and safety as well as is designed for manufacturability and serviceability.
+ Performing thermal analysis to support design concepts as required
+ Performing the CAD entry to create designs and specifications and generating complete production level drawings and specifications that represent the mechanical design of the product.
+ Following all NPI, ECN and document control processes.
+ Working effectively with suppliers to prototype parts and assemblies and then evaluate first article prototypes resolving any design issues as needed
+ Providing sufficient support to manufacturing operations and production personnel to ensure the successful introduction of the product into production.
* Provide sustaining support as required for the life of the product including failure analysis and troubleshooting.
* Explore and evaluate on a regular basis, mechanical design and manufacturing alternatives for application to new and existing products.

Other Responsibilities:

* Perform other Engineering related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
* As requested, work with the Global Supply Chain to negotiate scope of work and contracts terms with outside suppliers and contractors.
* May work with the Technical Writer and Customer Service personnel to ensure clarification on mechanical engineering questions so that product manuals and procedures are easy to understand and utilize by our partners and customers.
* May do analysis to assist in the selection of new mechanical CAD and/or other engineering tools.

Qualifications:

* BSME or equivalent technical background and experience required.
* Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience a Mechanical Engineer in the high tech industry dealing with electronics packaging. Preference for prior experience with mechanical issues for display products and optical engines.
* Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks CAD drafting and design.
* Experienced with third party design and manufacturing processes used in electronic packaging including but not limited to: sheet metal parts, machined parts, die made plastic parts, and die made metal parts.
* Knowledgeable of EMI design, thermal, vibration and shock analysis, and design for manufacturability and serviceability as applied in electronics packaging.
* Knowledgeable of final product packaging standards to meet ASTM/ISTA requirements with regards to protection and safety of product during shipping and handling.
* Demonstrated ability to manage time and multiple and changing priorities in a dynamic environment.
* Ability to work independently to bring products to market with minimal supervision.
* Prior success delivering to schedule and meeting aggressive timelines.

* May include some travel overseas and domestic to meet business needs.
* May require some non standard hours in support of a global business environment.
