Mechanical Engineer Plastic Injection Molding/Microfluidics

About the Job

The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Plastics Design will be responsible for the design and support of formed plastics. The Digital Biology Center is focused on applications of Droplet Digital technology to the life sciences and clinical diagnostics markets.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conceive and design high-volume, injection-molded lab consumables
    · Design plastic enclosures· Develop molded parts to replace precision, machined parts
    · Select materials based on mechanical, optical, chemical compatibility, cosmetic and other properties
    · Select forming and fabrication processes
    · Procure low-volume prototypes
    · Use modeling and other analytic tools to predict and optimize performance
    · Work with industrial designers to define ergonomics, usability and appearance of products
    · Develop requirements and specifications
    · Develop test methods and documentation
    · Manage tooling-production timelines and approve tool designs
    · Receive and test first articles, drive process optimization and complete final qualification
    · Act as technical lead for the product releases
    · Deliver clear production documentation and design history records
    · Develop vendors and manufacturing partner capability
    · Sustain products over their lifetimes – monitor capacity and initiate cost reduction projects
    · Prepare and make presentations
    · Meet agreed-to schedules and deliverables
    · Work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, product-focused environment
    · BS (MS preferred) in mechanical engineering or closely-related discipline
    · 8 or more years of experience in design of injection-molded plastic in medical, life-sciences or consumer products
    · 5+ years of experience with solid-modeling software
    · Extensive knowledge of polymer properties, especially those used in the medical and life sciences industries
    · Experience with FEA, mold-flow and other simulation tools in product development
    · Practical knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing


    • Experience with design of injection-molded, micro-fluidic parts a strong plus
    • Experience with life-sciences or medical instrumentation a plus
    • Experience with quality-improvement methodologies, such as Six Sigma, a plus
