Medical Coder
Position Summary
Under indirect supervision, reviews medical records and assigns the appropriate CPT and ICD-9 code(s) while adhering to compliance published regulations and guidelines.
Essential Functions
- Reviews medical record documentation and assigns CPT and ICD-9 codes to all billable encounters while adhering to compliance with published regulations and guidelines.
- Interacts with physicians and other patient care providers regarding billing and documentation policies, procedures, and regulations; obtains clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
- Researches, analyzes, and responds to inquiries regarding compliance, coding, denials, and billable services.
- Ensures strict confidentiality of patient and financial records.
- Attends coding conferences, workshops, and in-house sessions to receive updated coding information on changes in coding and/or regulations.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
- Coding Certification required (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P) within one year of employment
- At least 1 year experience coding Evaluation and Management services.
- Ability to clearly communicate medical coding information to professional practitioners and/or the general public in a classroom, telephonic and internet application setting.
- Knowledge of coding concepts and principles.
- Knowledge and understanding of medical coding and billing systems and regulatory requirements.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and billing procedures and documentation.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
- Ability to adapt, modify and prioritize coding functions as required.
