Position Details:

 

Provide professional psychiatric services in collaboration with the Psychiatrist, the Primary Care Provider (PCP) and/or the mental health department.

 

Collaborate with Psychiatrist in accordance with state and federal guidelines and rules.

 

Provide behavioral healthcare to the scope and standards of practice established by a nationally recognized credentialing organization representing Nurse Practitioners/Clinical Nurse Specialists.

 

Function within the scope of practice of the state Nurse Practice Act and state Medical Practice Act.

 

Perform psychiatric evaluations.

 

Obtain chief complaints and perform focused exams for routine office visits regarding psychiatric issues.

 

Emphasize wellness, prevention, and early detection.

 

Order diagnostic tests, according to the chief complaint, physical findings and psychiatric symptoms.

 

Supervise support staff in delivery of care to patients.

 

Maintain universal precautions and infection control practices.

 

Provide smooth and timely flow of patients in accordance with the VA’s access standards and triage protocol.

 

Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and assist during respiratory and cardiac arrest procedures.

 

Operate emergency equipment, including monitor, automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) and portable oxygen.

 

Provide education to patients and families, according to needs and learning capacity.

 

Make tentative diagnoses based on DSM-IV TR criteria.

 

Review laboratory reports and make recommendations if change in psychiatric care is needed.

 

Perform basic psychiatric diagnostic testing.

 

Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology, prescribing and medication administration, including psycho-trophic medications.

 

Prescribe and administer medication within limits of privileges and state and federal regulations.

 

Provide individual, group and/or marital/family therapy, as applicable (if certified).

 

Provide community resources and appropriate psychiatric referrals as needed.

 

Document all pertinent patient information in the medical records and VISTA to demonstrate quality care delivery and promote continuity of care.

 

Maintain the VISTA clinic reminder tracking system for each enrolled patient as it relates to behavioral healthcare.

 

Assist in scheduling patients for initial and follow-up appointments in accordance with the VA’s access standards and the patient’s medical necessity.

 

Keep patients informed of their plan of care, including lab and psychiatric evaluation results as needed.

 

Assist the RN Manager in ensuring all patient information on electronic encounter documentation is complete and accurate.

 

Responsible for the CBOC’s compliance with all federal, state, local, JCAHO, OSHA, VA, Health Net, and Subcontractor safety and operational regulations, directives, and standards as it relates to scope of practice.

 

Participate in the ongoing Performance Improvement Program (PIP) between Health Net, its Subcontractor(s), and the VAMC.

 

Ensure that all required reports and clinical documentation is completed in an accurate, timely and complete fashion.

 

Participate in staff development programs.

 

Maintain confidentiality of all information and support patients’ privacy, rights, and safety.

 

Assist the RN Manager in the management/coordination of the CBOC’s mental health program day-to-day activity.

 

Perform other work‑related duties as assigned and within limits of privileges.

 

 

Experience/Qualifications Needed:

 

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and a graduate of an accredited program for nurse practitioners, including preceptor ship.

 

Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse (Preferred).

 

Minimum of one (1) year experience within the past three- (3) years as a provider in a related area of patient mental health care.

 

Current RN and NP state license. Must comply with all state requirements and regulations.

 

Current CPR/BLS certification.

 

Prescriptive authority in accordance to the state rules and regulations.

 

DEA Certification preferred.

 

Obtain and maintain a Scope of Practice/Collaborative Agreement with a state licensed physician prior to delivery of mental health services.

 

Knowledge of and ability to apply professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques.

 

Ability to assess patient’s condition, recognize adverse signs and symptoms, and react swiftly in emergency situations.

 

Ability to set realistic, measurable education goals for patients, taking into consideration patient/family needs, level of understanding, and available local resources.

 

Ability to develop and provide individualized and group counseling, guidance, and health instruction with a focus on mental health illness prevention and health maintenance.

 

Knowledge of pharmacological agents used in psychiatric treatment, including desired effects, side effects, complications, and patient usage considerations.

 

Knowledge of the basic concepts of customer service techniques related of age-specific population.

 

Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette.

 

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software and basic computer maneuverability.

 

 

Hours:

 

Monday through Friday, day shift.
