Motorcycle Mechanics

About the Job

Modern Solutions is looking for Mechanics to perform various duties in support of the Research and Development of Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles. This individual will be responsible for installing and removing various test parts and systems; document observations of test results; perform inspections; ensure serviceability requirements are met; and perform scheduled services and repairs of test vehicles according to service requirements and work orders.  A well-qualified candidate will possess a positive team player mentality and be willing to work with as well as learn from others.

 

Requirements:

·  High school diploma or GED.

·  Valid driving license with motorcycle endorsement.  Ability to pass drug screen, physical, and background check.

·  Verifiable completion of formalized training in the motor industry (MMI or AMI preferred).

·  Possess 2-10 years of recent and verifiable DEALERSHIP job related experience performing maintenance and repair on motorcycles (Harley-Davidson & Buell perfered).

·  Ability to pass a written test regarding Harley-Davidson and Buell systems.

·  Proficiency in the use of hand tools and measuring devices such as dial caliper, micrometer, torque wrench, and multi meter or equivalent complexity.

·  Employees must provide a basic tools set.

·  Possess good technical understanding, skills, and methodical approach to problem solving experience in the use of flow charts and basic trouble-shooting techniques.

·  Ability to quickly diagnose problems exercising a high proficient at solving them.

·  Possess the technical skills to assess and explain failures, demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·  Proficiency in basic knowledge of motorcycle systems and system operations.

·  Ability to read and understand electrical schematic diagrams

·  Coordination of normal mental dexterity and visual attention including good vision, hearing, and motor skills. Ability to safely lift, handle and operate heavyweight motorcycles.

·  Basic computer skills.

·  Must be willing to travel off site. Overnight travel may be deemed necessary.

 

Preferred Experience:

·  Desired trade schools subjects should include theory, diagnostics, as well as maintenance and repair. 

·  Experience in a product development environment.

·  Harley-Davidson and/or Buell knowledge of systems and components with the understanding of instrumentation and/or data acquisition equipment used in vehicle testing.

·  Fabrication experience such as welding, machining etc.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Vehicle Service and Repair

  • Perform pre-delivery and setup procedures on new vehicles.
  • Configure vehicles for testing correctly and according to test request documentation.
  • Perform scheduled services and repairs of test vehicles according to service requirements and work orders.
  • Install and remove various test parts and systems and documents observations of test results, inspections and serviceability requirements.
  • Install motorcycle onto vehicle test stands ensuring that vehicles are correctly secured and all interface connections are properly adjusted.
  • Install and configures instrumentation on vehicles for durability tests.
  • Perform bright light and final audits on vehicles defined by the Customer.

 

Observation/Reporting

  • Record activities related to vehicle service and repair by using the Test Incident Reporting (TIR) system to document failures and causative relationships.
  • Assist Test Analysts/Engineers in determining root cause and contributing causes of failures.
  • Document configuration changes and deviations from configuration specifications.

 

Safety

  • Ensure that all employees in the workshop area perform their work in accordance with all saftey policies.
  • Set the example for others by using safe work practices to avoid accidents/incidents.
  • Requires use of protective equipment in the shop to reduce potential hazards. Must ensure that vehicles are safe to operate before releasing for test procedures.

 

Skill Development

  • Participate in training courses provided by Modern Solutions/Customer to enhance the employee's skills and any other training deemed necessary by the Customer.
  • Develop skills necessary to correctly use automated data collection systems such as the TIR system.
  • Complete the full PHD Video Tape Program within 12 months.

 

Confidentiality:

  • Will regularly work with confidential material such as prototype parts and documents.
