An excellent career opportunity is currently available for a Network & Data Management Support Specialist within UOP's Research facility located in Des Plaines, IL.  This position will be part of a network and data management group supporting real time data acquisition systems used by research and pilot plant operations within UOP's 575+ member R&D organization.  
 
Position Responsibilities:
  
Server Hardware Support:
  • Assemble, install, configure, and build the operating system on computers used for process control, on-line analytical, and data management services.

  • Track available firmware and driver updates for all server makes/models in use. Update as necessary to correct problems and maintain stable server operation. Monitor servers for hardware issues. Initiate vendor servicing or parts replacements for in-warranty servers. Repair out-of-warranty servers utilizing spare parts inventory or acquisition of required components. Coordinate system downtime for repairs with appropriate system owner.

Server Operation Support:
  • Perform routine checks of servers' system logs to verify error-free operation. Notify system owners as appropriate when anomalies are found.

  • Apply security patches and anti-virus updates in compliance with Honeywell security best-practices and directives. Notify system owners regarding issues with patches or anti-virus updates.

  • Manage tape backups and off-site tape rotations for RSN systems. Notify system owners of problems with backups, backup software, tape drives, tapes, or tape-rotations.

R&D Secure Network (RSN) Support:
  • Act as a key support resource for the Des Plaines RSN infrastructure on a 24 x 7 basis. Act as backup support resource for the Riverside RSN.

  • Install, configure, and manage network switches as needed to support process control, on-line analytical, and data management systems.

  • Monitor RSN network switches for errors. Utilize knowledge of critical systems and data flows, to determine probable impact these errors on process control, on-line analytical, and data management services. Remediate problems and communicate with other RSN support staff, affected system owners, and end users.

  • Troubleshoot and remediate RSN network issues. This includes issues with process control devices, SCADA servers/clients, analytical instruments, data management systems, firewalls, switches, fiber, cabling, NICs, LAN/WAN links, TCP/IP configuration, etc.

  • Act as a system administration resource for critical RSN systems such as SAN, NAS, Oracle, SharePoint, SQL Server, ChemLaunch, and Laboratory Data Storage System (LDSS).

  • Contribute to the overall RSN disaster recovery procedures by documenting procedures used to perform management of network, server, and system-software resources. Documentation must include unique and critical aspects of managing these resources as it relates to operating in an isolated process control and data management environment.

Infrastructure Services:
  • Perform routine checks in server rooms and network closets for HVAC, power, lighting, UPS, and safety issues. Notify owners of these services (e.g., Facilities, IT) when issues arise. Coordinate problem remediation between these external groups and UOP R&D.

  • Act as liaison and primary contact between Facilities and UOP R&D when planned or unplanned service outages such as power or HVAC occur on the Des Plaines campus. Make Facilities aware of unique and critical requirements necessary to insure a safe and orderly shutdown and restart of RSN infrastructure.

  • Act as liaison and primary contact between IT and UOP R&D when planned or unplanned service outages such as the enterprise wide network (EWN), the Des Plaines-to-Riverside WAN link, or IT services occur. Make IT aware of unique and critical requirements necessary to insure a safe and orderly shutdown and restart of RSN infrastructure.

Asset Management:
  • Manage all software maintenance agreements for RSN systems. Initiate renewals of agreements as required.

  • Maintain RSN server and network switch hardware inventory. Notify system owners regarding warranty and service agreement expirations.

  • Maintain detailed inventory of network switch gear, servers, PCs, and ancillary equipment used in the RSN. Where applicable, maintain a spare parts inventory for this equipment.

  • Arrange for physical asset disposal/recycling, as well as asset decommissioning with UOP accounting department.


Basic Candidate Requirements:   
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a related engineering discipline is required.

  • Minimum 5 + years work experience in a network and server support role.

  • Minimum 2 + years experience with Cisco network switch IOS configuration and management. 

  • Minimum 2 + years experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, TCP/IP networking fundamentals, DNS, and Active Directory management, particularly as it relates to a secured process control network environment.

  • Minimum 2 + years experience troubleshooting and repairing servers and PCs.

Additional Candidate Requirements:  
  • Commitment to corporate and departmental health, safety and environmental (HSE) initiatives-especially as it relates to operating a network, process control systems, and data management services in an environment that can have significant HSE implications when faults occur is ideal.

  • Detailed understanding of network design, data flows, and operational considerations as it relates to managing a secured process control, on-line analytical, and data management network is a plus.

  • Familiarity with administration of systems such as Microsoft SharePoint, SQL Server, Oracle, and UNIX is a plus.

  • Proficiency in scripting and programming, especially .Net would be a plus.

  • CCENT certification is a plus.

    MCSE certification is a plus.

  • Ability to function effectively in a team based work environment.

  • Excellent organizational skills and technical expertise.

  • Self directed and capable of operating with a minimum of supervision.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
