Position Description: Versatile technical individual with a in designing, implementing and supporting networking systems. Responsible for performing the following duties: management of LAN and WAN network environments, Voice over IP services, connectivity to multiple OS and application systems, and security of local and wide area network in a multi-campus environment. He or she must be able to evaluate, recommend and support policy and procedures for LAN, WAN, routers, switches, firewall, VPN, and web hardware and connectivity. He or she will be directly responsible for the implementations and the maintenance of networked systems, infrastructure, and other related sub-systems to provide efficient resource utilization and performance. In addition, the selected individual will be involved in procurement recommendations.
Interfaces with clients and vendors on a regular basis. As such excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. He or she will consult with software and hardware vendors and other establishment workers to solve problems impeding network access or computer processing. He or she will meet with users to review quality of service issues and identify needs.
Position Requirements: Three (3) to five (5) years of technical experience in networking technologies. Cisco environment preferred
Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and network connectivity requirements on multiple computing platforms. Specific understanding of industry trends and standards. Very end user oriented. Must have strong work ethnic. Must be team orientated. Work with staff/faculty at all skill/management levels. Cisco certification would be considered a plus towards the selection criteria.
General Skills Must Include: •Good communications (written and oral) and documentation skills. •Ability to work closely with team members. Must be a team oriented person. •Strong Project Management skills. •Working knowledge or experience with PC based server platforms.
Key Technical skills include: •Network design and implementation. •Wide area technologies such as Frame Relay, ATM, and ISDN. •IP protocol suite and the associated routing issues •LAN protocol management to include address management and network protocol configuration (IP, AppleTalk, NetBIOS, etc.). •Familiarity with the Cisco product line Good understanding of Fire-Walls and Network security measures. •Demonstrated ability to determine, evaluate and diagnose network and application performance issues and recommend and implement solutions. Desired Skills/Knowledge/Experience: •Strong skills in PC server applications and environment are a plus. •Experience with UNIX (SUN Solaris & Linux) is a plus. •Experience with open-source products such as Linux and Apache in production environments is desirable. •A telecom background is very helpful. •Demonstrated experience with Voice Over IP is a plus including: •Cisco Call Manager and Unity software •Cisco VOIP design and implementation
Additional Skills Desired: •Advanced Cisco certification is desirable.
