MUST BE ABLE TO WORK NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS FOR NETWORK ACTIVITY

A leading provider of managed networking solutions has a Temp-to-Hire position available for a Network Technician I.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The purpose of this position is to install, service and maintain communications network transmission systems, including:


  • Digital Cross Connect.
  • Digital Loop Carrier.
  • Channel Banks.
  • SONET Equipment.
  • Digital Switching.
  • Ancillary Support Systems.


The Network Technician performs technical field activity as it pertains to installation, maintenance and repair in the city network.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Network Technician:


  1. Performs installation, turn-up and testing of network transmission systems which include, but are not limited to:

    • SONET Multiplex.
    • Digital Cross-Connect Systems.
    • Channel Banks.
    • Digital Loop Carrier.
    • Smart Jacks.
    • Synchronization Equipment.
    • Video and Data Communications equipment.



      • This activity will be conducted at Central Office Locations, POPs, LSOs and customer premise locations.


  2. Performs installations and testing of integrated T1 products using Tberd test set, as well as:

    • Switch Line Services:


      • T-3 (DS-3)
      • T-1 (DS-1)
      • DS-0
      • BRI
      • PRI


    • Switch Business Lines and Trunks


  3. Knows the Telecom color code.
  4. Is responsible for working stand-by as it relates to after-hours maintenance or repair issues.
  5. Interfaces with customers to resolve installation problems relative to space and power requirements.
  6. Resolves technical circuit problems on DS1, DS3 and DS0 circuits, as well as all supporting equipment.
  7. Performs fiber optic splice activity pertaining to network optimization or new customer turn-up.
  8. Develops and utilizes operations and maintenance procedures of Network Transmission systems equipment.
  9. Maintains network equipment.

    • Is responsible for troubleshooting and correcting Network Transmission equipment problems, deficiencies and system issues using Network Transmission equipment.


  10. Develops and maintains Test procedures for the troubleshooting and maintenance of fiber transmission facilities.
  11. Accesses and utilizes existing operational systems such as Remedy, Accugraph, etc., when reviewing circuit layout records, work orders and other tools to support provisioning and maintenance activities.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Night and weekend work for network activity is required.

The employee frequently is required to walk; i.e. use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and climb a ladder. Additionally, the employee is regularly required to operate a company vehicle to include a bucket truck.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, as well as push or pull up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision with no color impairment.
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • The noise level in this office work environment can be excessively loud. The work environment is primarily outside and can include inclement weather. The work environment can also include exposure to chemicals and fumes. Exposure to heavy equipment used in aerial and burial fiber construction is often required.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

This position reports to the Operations Manager, who reports to the Director of Operations and Engineering.

This is a Contract to Direct Hire position, through Volt Technical Resources - a division of a Fortune 1000 publicly traded Staffing Industry Leader, based in New York City. We are among the largest IT staffing companies in the US for contract/temporary and direct hire placements and support most of the top rated IT companies on the East Coast.



Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required.

Required Skills for this Network Technician position include the following:


  1. 3-5 years of experience
  2. A valid Driver’s License with a clear driving record for a minimum of three (3) years required
  3. A minimum of one (1) year of the following required:

    • Basic Field Installation experience
    • Experience installing, testing and troubleshooting SONET TDM services and T1 Switch Voice services


  4. Experience with OC-3 - OC192 and OTDR Test set preferred
  5. Experience making CAT 5 Ethernet, T1 and Data Cables
  6. Two-year degree in Electronics or 3-5 years of experience in operating and maintaining Digital Transmission facilities
  7. Experience working with a local Telco and internal testing a plus
  8. A working knowledge of SONET transmission facilities preferred
  9. Must have received specific training (typically, vendor-related) in Transmission System installation, operations and maintenance
  10. Experience with Lucent equipment, as well as fiber knowledge of SONET standards and equipment a strong plus
  11. Must be a quick study, able to work independently, resolve problems, set priorities and interface with others (i.e. customers, Engineers, vendors, NOC, contractors, etc.)


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to work with PC and software applications include, but are not limited to word processing, spreadsheets and communication applications
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
