BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION:  Provide technical assistance in the analysis, and implementation of activities related to nuclear and industrial safety basis.

DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Safety Basis support includes identifying and analyzing the hazards associated with Department of Energy/NNSA nuclear and moderate hazard industrial facilities, working with line personnel to determine which controls best reduce or eliminate these hazards, and documenting the results of this review in reports which are approved by DOE.  Safety Basis support also includes working with line personnel to ensure adequate implementation of these controls and reviewing changes to make sure that they do not increase the level of safety risk posed by the facility.  Safety Basis support includes performing review of work in these same areas performed by others to determine if the safety risks and controls have been adequately defined and working with the regulators to resolve emerging issues and concerns.  As part of this effort, personnel may be required to learn how to lead root cause analysis reviews (for identified problems), and develop corrective actions.  Personnel may also be asked to learn how to calculate radioactive and other hazardous material dose levels given a hypothetical situation.  Primarily seeking personnel with 4 – 8 years of experience.

Major responsibilities include:

·         Attending safety basis meetings.

·         Reviewing and documenting the impact of changes.

·         Writing safety basis reports.

·         Reviewing safety basis reports written by others to determine if they meet requirements.

·         Peforming safety calculations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  As a minimum, the candidate shall have a Bachelor of Science in an engineering or other technical field.  A minimum of three years of plant or engineering experience is desired. 

The candidate shall have demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills and be a self starter.  The ability to recognize problems and come up with innovative solutions is a plus.

The candidate must be capable of getting a Q clearance (i.e. US Citizen, no felonies, etc.).   Current or previous clearance a big plus.
