Vassar Brothers Medical Center Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) is a 30 bed Med/Surg Unit specializing in Respiratory patients with 10 private rooms which are used for ventilated patients. The unit has at times exceeded 10 ventilators but the average vent census is 4-5. BiPap is another frequent Respiratory Modality used there. In fact this is the only Unit beside Critical Care that can admit patients newly placed on BiPap.
The unit has a budget of 49 FTE's with a 4:1 to 5:1 nurse patient ratio, and a 2008 RN turnover rate of 6.25%.
There is a Respiratory Therapist always assigned to the unit with therapist driven weaning protocols as well as a Pulmonologist that is the MD champion of the unit. Daily multidisciplinary rounds are made resulting in a decreasing LOS for the vent patients.
BSN, NYS License with ACLS preferred. Three to five years management and mechanical ventilation experience.*
