PATHOLOGY PREP TECH/40/days/NSMC

Description:
SUMMARY:
With minimal supervision, the Pathology Prep Tech performs a variety of functions in the pathology department, including specimen receipt, patient registration, specimen accessioning and processing.

PRIMARY RESPONIBILITIES
1. Accessions and processes Non-Gynecologic cytology specimens including body fluids, smears, FNAs and ThinPrep specimens for microscopic evaluation.
2. This includes assigning accession numbers, Thin Prep Processing, CytopSpin processing, manual and automated stainers, changing reagents, and cover slipping.
3. Prepares non-GYN specimens for immunohistochemistry and special stain testing.
4. Render a gross description of all Non-Gynecologic specimens.
5. Accessions and prepares Surgical specimens for the Pathologist Assistants.
6. Embed processed tissue, carefully determining orientation and specimen requirements.
7. Prepare FNA smears for the radiologist, at patient bedside, for STAT analysis by the pathologist. This requires ability to determine best protocol for individual specimens.
8. Registers patients in the hospital computer system.
9. Responsible for assuring that all inventories are complete and appropriate supplies are ordered.
10. Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies and assures compliance of the Pathology Lab.
11. Responsible for completion of all quality control, safety, and preventative maintenance logs.
12. Disposes and labels biohazard waste appropriately.
13. Identify test in question (TIQ) and problem specimens.
14. Maintains specimen identification and integrity throughout all processes of the department.
15. Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing and staining of specimens.

Qualifications:
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1. Finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
2. Must have great attention to details and the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
3. Must begin and complete all assignments with minimal supervision.
4. Data entry skills.
5. Ability to follow protocols which are dependent upon specimens types, specimen adequacy, and the individual needs of clinicians and pathologists.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Associate degree in science.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS and/or REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
None required

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Some college science and/or 2 years laboratory experience.
