SUMMARY:
Under direction of a physician in the surgical specialty, assists in surgery and provides surgical care to patients. Surgical care may include performing complete histories and physical exams, performing or ordering simple diagnostic tests, prepare a diagnosis and implement treatment procedures for illnesses as well as emergency cases, developing a working diagnosis to provide continuing medical care including daily exams, writing orders, chart notes and discharge summaries
PRIMARY RESPONIBILITIES:
1. Preoperative (where required);
- Elicit a detailed, accurate history and perform a complete physical examination.
- Evaluate patients readiness for surgery.
- Order appropriate tests relevant to the preoperative assessment.
- Request consults appropriate to the preoperative assessment.
- Prescribe medications as necessary.
2. Operative;
- Assist in the preparation of the patient for the Cardiac surgical procedure. This may include positioning the patient on the OR table and prep/drape the patient for the procedure.
- Assist in the general operation when deemed necessary by the attending surgeon.
- Follows case assignments as required by the Clinical Director and the Chief of the Service and according to NSMC policies and procedures
3. Clinical Practice;
- - Acts as a resource where expertise is requested in cardiac devices.
- - Prepares and knows the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for cardiac procedures
- Develops and improves skills in the organization of work and in assisting the physician make efficient use of time, motion, and materials.
- Identifies emergency situations and uses sound judgment in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.
- Responds to the Cardiac surgeon's need for assistance on Cardiac OR cases.
- Assumes on-call status for the Cardiac ICU/ Step down and Operating Room aas required by the Chief of the Service.
- Demonstrates aseptic technique for pin and drain removal.
- Demonstrates proper technique for cast and suture removal.
4. Postoperative Patient Care;
- Performs appropriate evaluation of assigned patients on an as needed basis.
- Orders Medications, treatments, labs and consults as needed.
- Initiates and carries out discharge planning.
- Completes discharge prescriptions and forms for review by the physician.
- Writes daily notes on all patients.
- Discusses the care of the individual patient directly with the attending surgeon that is responsible for the care of that patient.
May perform the following duties as needed:
- insert peripheral IV lines
- perform venous punctures for specific lab tests
- insert arterial lines
- administer blood products
- mix and/or administer IV medications
- read radiographs
- perform suturing as needed
Immediate opportunity for full-time PA/NP with Cardiac Surgery experience to join a young, growing cardiac program. PA/NP will join two surgeons, four PAs and two NPs. Duties include all phases of patient care, preop, surgical 1st assist, ICU and telemetry care. 24/7 in-house care. Salary commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
3 to 5 years of PA/NP experience in cardiac /cardiac surgery required.
All certifications and licensure for the State of Massachusetts required.
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Must be a graduate from an accredited program. Masters Degree Preferred
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION and/or REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
Must have current Massachusetts PA/NP License
