Paralegal I

Position Objective:

Performs, in accordance with established policies and procedures, a variety of duties to assist attorneys to whom assigned.  Observes strictest confidentiality in all matters.  Manages documentary aspects of (a) financial and other transactions, (b) contract negotiations and development, (c) civil and administrative litigation and (d) corporate maintenance and other legal matters.  Collects, analyzes, organizes and maintains factual information and documents in accordance with correct legal practice and procedure.

Principal Accountabilities:

Activity

 

Makes independent decisions based on application of knowledge and experience in providing paralegal support.  This includes, but is not limited to,  creating and maintaining litigation documents, opening case files, performing legal research,

assisting with litigation matters, tracking and reporting legal expenses, witness interviews and document review.

 

 

Reviews and analyzes matters for the purpose of preparing matter

evaluations and status reports.  Conducts legal research, drafts memos,

and assists in preparing for and summarizing depositions, opinions, reports and information related to the matter. Prepares chronologies and medical records summaries for litigation cases.

 

Keeps current on laws and regulations through continued legal education

each year.  Conducts legal research for attorneys on statutes and cases via Lexis/Nexis.  Projects include compilation of information on various topics gathered from searches of all fifty states.

 

Drafts Discovery responses Interrogatories and Requests for Production of Documents for litigation cases.  Prepares initial document holds to incoming litigation.  Manages documents in all transaction and litigation matters.

 

Performs additional assignments as required, such as assisting with

providing legal support to various departments of company, conducting compliance

advertising and form reviews and assisting attorneys with

special projects.

 

Manages available resources with great efficiency and develops cost effective resolutions for work related matters.  Create and maintain repository of key legal opinions, motions, legal briefs and other documents.

 

Independently handles significant business matters, not ethically requiring attorney supervision, like Board reports, reinsurance submissions, recovery, analysis of customer complaints, subpoena responses.  Assists and provides initial reviews for power of attorney issues, rescission matters and other legal issues.

  • Knowledge of the company/departments and their relationships a plus, but not necessary
  • Lexis/Nexis research skills

 

Education and Experience:

 

Education: 

  • Paralegal certificate required or equivalent

 

Experience:  

  • 3+ Years of Experience preferred
