Clinical Data is a dynamic, growing biotechnology company developing early and late stage targeted therapeutics as well as genetic and pharmacogenomic tests that detect serious diseases and help predict drug safety, tolerability and efficacy. Our late-stage compounds include Vilazodone, a potential first-in-class drug candidate for the treatment of depression, and Stedivaze, a potential best-in-class cardiac stress agent.
We are looking for a bright, experienced, articulate, business-savvy patent agent or patent attorney to assist with management of the intellectual property affairs of the company and its subsidiaries. This position will report directly to the Associate General Counsel of IP and be situated at our executive office in Newton, Massachusetts. This is a full-time position.
Essential Functions and Duties (4-10 bullet points) |
- Assist with maintenance of the existing patent and trademark estates.
- Review applications, office actions responses, amendments and other prosecution documents drafted by outside counsel.
- Draft applications, office action responses, amendments and other prosecution documents for patents which are managed in-house.
- Develop IP strategy for small molecule patents in view of patent and FDA laws.
- Assist with IP-related legal services in support of the company’s business development activities, including: providing opinions regarding patentability, freedom-to-operate, patent invalidity and non-infringement, performing due diligence, and managing procurement of such opinions by outside counsel.
- Depending on interest, opportunity to assist with agreements relating to a variety of intellectual property matters, including confidentiality agreements, consulting agreements, collaboration and licensing agreements, as well as trademark and copyright prosecution.
Education
- Doctorate in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry or biology, with small molecule experience preferred OR at least 5 years scientific experience in the pharma industry.
- OPTIONAL: law degree and admission to a state bar.
Experience
- 1-5 years patent experience at a law firm or in-house at a pharma company.
- Doctorate in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry or biology, with small molecule experience preferred OR at least 5 years scientific experience in the pharma industry.
- PREFERRED: registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (language, technical, communication, etc.)
- Read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, scientific data, patent documents, governmental regulations, and legal documents.
- Draft well-organized and understandable patent applications and persuasive responses to office actions.
- Prepare concise and understandable written and oral summaries of IP strategy for the scientific, business and legal staff.
· Work as a team member with employees in other departments, with different educational backgrounds and job responsibilities.
· Responsive, dependable, flexible and attention to detail.
