Payroll Manager

The Payroll Manager is responsible for ensuring the accurate processing of weekly and bi-weekly payroll and taxes for 10,000+ geographically dispersed DSW associates.   This role will focus on managing third-party providers and leading a small internal team. The role will partner with internal clients to assess operational needs and make recommendations to senior managers concerning the products and tools necessary to support the DSW business (e.g., Virtual Edge, e-Verify, WOTC, etc.). This position reports to the Director, Compensation & Benefits and supervises a team of 2-4 associates. Must possess the ability to:
  • Function as lead internal resource managing third-party vendor relationships associated with payroll processing.
  • Manage and coordinate all facets of payroll processing for payees in multiple states.
  • Ensure timely updates to payroll systems and procedures as required, due to changes in regulations, pay policies, notifications and compensation initiatives.
  • Oversee and resolve issues related to direct deposit/paycards, manual checks, child support, wage garnishments and any payroll processing discrepancies.
  • Oversee the accurate administration and remittance of tax deposits in over 280 tax jurisdictions.
  • Manage team of 2 to 4 payroll staff including resource allocation, training and problem resolution. Evaluate performance, recommend personnel actions and motivate associates to peak productivity and performance.
  • Work closely with Finance and HR to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of reporting.
  • Ensure staff is appropriately trained on tools and processes associated with payroll processing, as necessary.


Job Requirements:
  • 5-7 years of experience managing payroll processing, required.
  • Must have experience working with third-party payroll provider tools and processes. Advanced knowledge of Payroll/HR processes, data interfaces and query/data source tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting/payroll processing principles and HR wage-related procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State wage and hour regulations and tax filing procedures.
  • General knowledge of compensation, benefits and HR systems.
  • Customer service oriented with excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Strong planning & organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience in both project management and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to identify issues and manage to resolution.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with ad hoc payroll reporting.
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or business related field preferred.
