Systems Engineer

About the Job

Responsible for the high level systems support and monitoring for a regional data center (RDC). Candidate will contribute to the installation and configuration of software, as well as integration of solutions in an ISP environment. Provides systems and applications support and engineering for the Sun Solaris platform and Microsoft NT servers. The job is a combination of advanced systems administration and systems engineering.


The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of multiple technologies; functional knowledge of DHCP, DNS, HTTP/S, HTML, POP, SMTP, LDAP, SNMP, TCP/IP protocols, Internet routing and firewalls, security, News and WWW applications. Product deployment and end user support experience desirable; 2-4 years experience with supporting production systems; experience working within an operations environment supporting NT and UNIX systems; experience with computer hardware utilizing the Microsoft NT and UNIX operating systems, experience with network devices. Experience with SQL and Perl programming is desired. Candidate should also possess working knowledge of an Enterprise Class Mail solution and Directory Services (LDAP).


The candidate should understand Inter-networking technologies; have a clear understanding of the Internet, knowledge of switching, routing and load balancing systems, and an understanding of web hosting systems and LAN/WAN networking technologies. Knowledge of network and systems monitoring, customer support, technical support, and service deployment are all desirable. The candidate must be a team player, with an inherent ability to work well under tight timelines, and have strong problem-solving capabilities.



Background should include expertise in Internet service related products, backup, security and monitoring software; experience with the development of test procedures and custom system/network monitoring solutions. Working knowledge of Data over Cable systems (DOCSIS) is a plus; ISP, Cable, VoIP or Broadband environment experience is highly valued. Must be able to provide concise procedures and documentation of operational procedures and be willing to work variable shift hours and rotate in on-call duties.


 



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Provide administrative services under the direction of the Version Release Administrator. Responsibilities include planning and distribution of hardware BiOS, firmware and driver. Measures of success include the ability to operationally and securely maintain an environment that provides optimal uptime. Distribution, configuration and management documentation are essential functions, as well.
• Remediate backup issues on a daily basis. Use of tools such as APTARE is essential to identifying and tracking backup problems. Activity and status reports should be generated daily and forwarded to management. Measures of success include the ability to resolve and report backup issues in a timely manner as well as to identify reoccurring problems or trends to Problem Management.
• Provide Tier II and III support services to the team. Duties include processing or troubleshooting Remedy tickets as assigned. Measures of success include the ability to resolve assigned tickets in a timely manner as well as be viewed positively by our customers as courteous and helpful.
• Perform other duties as required by management.
