About the Job

The following description is quite detailed. Our intention is to provide a realistic picture of the opportunity so that you can make a well-informed choice. Our Hospital & Community From your first visit to Fremont-Rideout, you instantly sense a “small town” community and culture that is warm and collegial, yet has the technological capabilities and expert clinical staff of a large city hospital. We offer endless opportunities for professional growth, state-of-the-art facilities, a supportive, cohesive team environment, and a California lifestyle with all of the activities and none of the traffic and congestion. Plus, with the median home price at $116,000, the cost of living is attractive too! In fact, the Yuba-Sutter region was recently named the Top Small Community in California and the 10th Best Small Community in America by Forbes magazine. Fremont Medical Center and Rideout Memorial Hospital are proud of the roles we play in our twin cities of Yuba City and Marysville, and our community outreach and intervention programs are examples of our overarching goal to proactively improve the lives and health of our neighbors.

Our hospitals are in a dynamic growth phase highlighted by our new Cardiac Surgery and Coronary Intervention Program, the addition of new state-of-the-art technologies, and an upgrade of our pharmacy facilities. We recently moved our Rideout pharmacy to a brand new facility on the top floor, where we are right in the “heart” of hospital operations. And, our Fremont pharmacy will move to a new facility at the end of 2003.

The Opportunity -  Whether you are an experienced Pharmacist or a recent graduate, the opportunity offered by the Fremont-Rideout hospitals is rich and rewarding. As a member of our team, you will witness our transformation into a fully automated pharmacy and gain first hand experience in an evolving and expanding facility. We are not a “basement” fulfillment operation, far from it. As our top-floor location at Rideout suggests, we play a prominent, proactive role in our facilities. The hospital doctors, nurses and other clinicians consult closely and often with our pharmacists and we are actively increasing our clinical activities on the hospital floor.

Here’s a closer look:

The Team -  You will join a well-rounded team of eight full time pharmacists, who range from recent graduates to experienced, tenured pharmacists, some of whom have been working together here for sixteen years. The Director fosters a collaborative environment by involving everyone in the decision making process, and is an active participant on the pharmacy “line.” Our pharmacy team is much like a family. Although we operate in a busy, fast-paced setting, we find time to celebrate birthdays, have a Christmas party and even the occasional summer barbeque.

The Pharmacies -  Our team works in the pharmacies located in both hospitals, which are just minutes apart. We operate from 7am to 9pm, Monday through Friday, and from 8am-6pm on Weekends and holidays. Our team of eight is divided into two shifts (from 7am – 6pm and from 10am – 9pm), and each member works four shifts each week. Weekend and holiday shifts rotate; but in general, you will work every third weekend. Since we service two major hospitals, our patient population is diverse and keeps our workload challenging. You will join us in the early stages of a full technology and facility upgrade. Our new location in Rideout is complete, and we are focused on automating both locations to free our hands for more clinical activities on the hospital floor. We currently spend about 70% of our time on distribution and 30% on clinical activities. Our goal is to reach 50% distribution and 50% clinical with this new technology.

Continuing Education - A big part of life at Rideout is continuing education. We offer comprehensive training and mentoring for new graduates and less experienced Pharmacists, and you will begin with a training program tailored to your individual needs. Fremont-Rideout has a close association with Yuba Community College, and the University of California at Sacramento is just 40 minutes away and offers bachelor’s and master’s programs. Additional Insight from the Director To excel in our environment, you will rely heavily on your time management and communication skills. Ideally, you will organize and complete your routine tasks first thing in the morning, and then have the afternoon to dedicate to clinical activities with physicians and nurses.

Naturally, as we move toward a more even balance of drug dispensing and clinical work, your communication skills will be called to bear more frequently. This is an outstanding opportunity to further your professional development and be a member of a vibrant and expanding hospital network. In the words of the Director of Pharmacy: “We are expanding our pharmacy services and adding new technologies to significantly change the way we operate. For a new team member to join us now, he or she will see the full evolution of our pharmacy from the ground up.”

It might seem a cliché to say that just about everyone who works at our facility is friendly and likes coming here every day, but reserve judgment until you visit us. Many Traveling RNs request return assignments and some of our nurses came 3,000 miles to continue working with our doctors. In short, Rideout is as good in person as it appears on paper.

Qualifications Required background and experience: Current CA Pharmacy license. Graduation from an accredited school of pharmacy (new grads are welcome!). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred, but not required: PharmD. Experience in a hospital setting.
