The Hospital Billing Manager contributes to the achievement of the department’s goals and objectives, and is responsible for managing accounts receivables through billing to include the activities of inpatient, outpatient, emergency room and series billing, and receivables management.  This position provides leadership and oversight for the Billing staff. This position requires complex data analysis and troubleshooting, and is required to make independent decisions within the scope of responsibility. 


 


Duties


 



  • Oversee management and coordination of the medical billing and other patient financial services staff. 
  • Accountable for the day-to-day billing and patient financial services operations, and conducts regular reviews of the billing cycle to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Identifies and monitors trends, develops standards and improved processes, conducts benchmark and competitive analysis or surveys, to build quality and efficiency in the billing and patient financial services functions. 
  • Responds to all regulatory editing and billing updates per JCAHO, DOH, and other legal and compliance regulations.  
  • Responsible for the oversight of proper handling of credit balances.
  • Manages oversight of all audits from government and payer agencies.
  • Prepares reports detailing billing and accounts receivable status for management. Interacts with internal and external contacts, including all levels of staff and management throughout TBH, and externally with patients and families, insurance companies, physicians and their staff, state and federal agencies, auditors, and vendors.
  • Acts as an internal consultant to resolve problems and provide billing expertise to other hospital departments. 
  • Monitors the work products of team members, provides feedback and input to ensure quality deliverables. 
  • Provides guidance, based on technical knowledge and operational experience, of system and process alternatives available to support the effort to achieve the organizational goals of TBH. 

 


 


Qualifications 


 



  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Degree in business, accounting or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience managing a large hospital medical billing team, including Medicare and Medicaid and private insurance billing experience.  Specific skills, knowledge and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations as they pertain to billing processes, procedures and reimbursement
  • Knowledge of insurance rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of insurance claim processing, claims editing, and third party reimbursement
  • Knowledge and detailed understanding of all negotiated agreements
  • Knowledge and detailed understanding of ICD-9, CPT, and HCPCS coding classification systems and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of customer service center environments, technology and processes
  • Skill in good oral, written, and interpersonal communication, including preparation and delivery of formal large group presentations (employer, customer, association and payer groups); skill in report writing and business correspondence.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, journals, financial reports, government regulations, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to develop a strong team environment, with clear roles and responsibilities, teamwork, and team development; applies appropriate supervisory, management and leadership techniques in an operation setting
