FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Vision, hearing, speaking clearly, stand, sit, stoop, walk, push, pull, lift/move up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity with arms and hands to grasp objects and operate office equipment, and lift/examine patients. Work overtime as needed.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and other days/hours as required by the position.
POSITION SUMMARY: Operates independently in treating patients and assists physician in treating patients.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to a medical treatment environment. Works under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)
1. Obtains appropriate medical history and physical data on patients. Reviews patient records.
2. Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures needed.
3. Performs an appropriate physical examination and records findings. Establishes presumptive diagnosis.
4. Utilizes problem-oriented medical record format in documentation management.
5. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
6. Synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention.
7. Obtains appropriate consultation with physician preceptor or specialist when patient evaluation and management requires such expertise.
8. Interviews and advises patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
9. Performs minor surgery to remove skin lesions for diagnosis and treatment. Sutures wounds.
10. Writes prescription orders for drugs in accordance with state laws.
11. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides patient education.
12. Performs independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.
13. Attends required professional staff meetings and participates in committees as requested.
14. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
15. Maintains strict confidentiality.
16. Consistently displays a positive attitude and a personal commitment to excellence.
17. Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE: Professional medical practice and care to evaluate and deliver patient care.
Organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
SKILLS: Applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine to provide on-going patient care. Taking medical history, assessing medical conditions interpreting findings. Applying effective patient counseling techniques and instituting timely patient education. Preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence. Developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
ABILITIES: React calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Communicate clearly. Maintain quality control standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
· Graduation from a physician assistant program accredited by the Committee on
Allied Health Education Accreditation (CAHEA), American Medical Association.
· Basic Life Support training.
· EXPERIENCE: Depends on clinical employment setting.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:
· Certification from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
· Certification and medical license-State of Florida.
· Prescription privileges and certification-State of Florida.
· Current CPR certification.
