Polysomnographic Tech

- The polysomnographic technologist works under medical supervision to perform and evaluate overnight polysomnograms. This individual functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology. The application of recording devices to the patient, cleaning/sterilization of equipment and monitoring of polysomnograms are essential duties of the technologist. Polysomnographic technologists must recognize sleep pathology when it occurs in the laboratory and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety. The polysomnography technologist must have the ability to integrate basic understanding of anatomy and physiology with sleep/wake pathology. The individual must be able to maintain vigilance in a non-stimulating environment. The technologist must know when to consult the physician regarding the patient's care. The technologist must react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. High school graduation with preferred emphasis on physical or biologic sciences. The polysomnography technologist receives training on the average of three to four months under the direct supervision of the laboratory technical and professional staff. The technologist may be required to attend appropriate seminars and courses. Respiratory therapist, EEG technicians, registered/licensed nurse or any facet of allied health field is preferred. Certification in Basic Life Support. CB
