1. Purpose Statement:

 

The primary role of the Portfolio Director is to set and lead the strategy, vision, priorities and tactics for a global product portfolio. This position will own and ensure the global commercial performance and profit and loss success of the products within the portfolio whilst working in close partnership with Commercial teams to ensure the markets are briefed and equipped to maximise the portfolio investment.

 

The Portfolio Director must understand the strategic vision developed by the Strategy Channels, assess the impact and required direction in order to shape, define and establish a product strategy and roadmap for the appropriate portfolio to define and develop products that meet the needs of the business. In this key leadership role, the Portfolio Director must be able to establish, lead and direct international cross functional teams and partner with all other functional teams. This position provides leadership and direction for a global product portfolio, and is a key contributor in setting the organization’s solutions strategy in order to meet business objectives as well as directly managing a team of Product Managers and Strategists that is responsible for individual product line contributions within the portfolio.

The Portfolio Director is required to build an extensive understanding of the market landscape for the particular portfolio specifically focused on competitive information, customer/market data, technical developments and key trends, opportunities and threats. The role is expected to articulate knowledge and expertise both internally and externally to customers, industry bodies and press in order to position their product portfolio and set industry solution direction. Using strategic thinking and strong commercial acumen aligned with a customer centric approach the Portfolio Director will constantly validate product strategy and direction to ensure competitive advantage, constantly evolving the customer value proposition and ensuring the product portfolio roadmaps meets the needs of the market and customers.

 

2. Main Accountabilities:

 

• Set and execute the vision and strategy for a global product portfolio

 

• Lead the team of individual Product Managers and Strategists accountable for the product line contribution

 

• Develop an internal and external product plan/roadmap defining their position, evolution and timing, across all markets, to meet changing customer needs and ensuring that their integration with other products is appropriately managed

 

• Create and manage the “contract” of delivery of all Travelport products with the appropriate technology organizations.

 

• Own the lifecycle management of the portfolio of products working across functions and business units as required ensuring the delivery and launch of products to time, cost, quality and market and channel requirements.

• Create Business Cases to support product investments as Contribute to the strategic planning and prioritization processes and manage the product capital planning and allocation against strategy.

 

• Responsible for determining and approving the product suite available and deployed to any given region, market or channel.

 

• Interact with customers, users, buyers and channel to fully understand and define the market needs and problems the portfolio is solving

 

• Manage the financial performance of the portfolio to achieve business goals, identify key issues, trends, opportunities to the senior leadership team

 

• Manage the entire Portfolio life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities

 

• Prioritize portfolio investments and continuously practice portfolio management to maximize opportunity and return on investment

 

• Define and set product roadmap and product marketing plans

 

• Evaluate information on new product ideas for financial and market potential

 

• Build high performing employees and high performing teams

 

• Define performance expectations to measure, guide and improve product performance

 

• Mange the annual capital investment for a given product portfolio and ensure budget are maintained

 

• Provide in-depth portfolio reviews for Senior leadership team

 

• Close coordination with other Portfolio Directors to ensure strategy alignment and product roadmap dependencies

 

• Forge and maintain strong relationships with technology development portfolio leaders and other dependant business functions

 

 

3. Knowledge, Skills, Experience, Training, Education:

 

• Minimum of 10 years experience as a Product Manager or Product Marketing Manager

 

• Demonstrated success defining and launching excellent products

 

• 5+ years of experience in a job commercially managing products

 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

• 5 Years experience of managing desperate global teams

 

• Graduate Bachelor's degree (MBA preferred) or equivalently qualified by experience

 

• Strong commercial acumen, gravitas and business leadership qualities

 

• Customer centric thinking and acting

 

• Outstanding communications skills for internal and external audiences

 

• Excellent relationship building skills with a good understanding of different cultures and how to work with them to deliver results, in a global organization.

 

• Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority

 

• Must be able to travel 40% of the time including global travel

 

• Demonstrable track record of analyzing market requirements and defining product requirements

 

• Experience in a software product management role in a global organization, but not essential

 

• Experience within the travel industry but not essential

 

• Commercial product management experience preferred to strong technical product understanding

 

4. Context/Environment:

 

• The Portfolio Director will be responsible for managing capital investment and delivery and managing products that directly support and grow annual contribution

 

• The current environment is one of technical feature function focus and a clear shift of emphasis towards commercial product management is underway

 

• Complexities of the role include directly managing a disparate global team based mainly in either the UK or Americas

 

• The incumbent is required to work within a complex and continuously changing environment with multiple priorities and across many cultures

 

• The incumbent will be expected to represent Travelport at relevant industry conferences and forums and interact with regulatory bodies and press where appropriate

5. Key Measures:

 

• Portfolio revenue and profit performance against plan and business case

 

• Product roadmap release milestones delivered against plan

 

• Production of key product lifecycle artifacts such as master product plan, product roadmap and business case

 

• Annual capital budgets are maintained within agreed tolerances

 

• Customer satisfaction results for given product set within agreed tolerances

 

 

6. Working Relationship 

 

• The incumbent must possess a unique blend of business and a technical appreciation; a big-picture vision, and the drive to make that vision a reality. You must enjoy spending time in the market to understand their problems, and find innovative solutions for the broader market.

 

• Liaison is required with customers and all areas of the company on a global basis with every business function and commercial region including 3rd party providers

 

• Managing a complex and truly global stakeholder map is a key responsibility for the Portfolio Director and will be a major contributor to achieving success
