Overview:
Reporting to the Director, Portfolio & Program Management for the Cell Systems Division (CSD) and the general direction of the Cellular Analysis business unit leadership, the incumbent in this position will be responsible for the portfolio and program management of the R&D programs for the business. Specifically responsible for facilitating the Product Commercialization Process (PCP) for the business, managing program managers leading R&D programs, supporting business leadership in the prioritization, resource allocation and decision-making activities relating to the Cellular Analysis Business Innovation portfolio.
Detailed Description:
· Facilitate the R&D portfolio management activities for the business unit including support for global business rhythms including SR-I and SR-II. Maintain the program documentation for SR-I, SR-II, quarterly portfolio reviews and AOP planning, as well as dashboards for monthly, quarterly and ongoing Business reviews and roll up to Division.
· Facilitate PCP for the business unit including facilitating Product Approval Committee meetings and guiding direct reports and program teams on best practices related to new product development.
· Work closely with research and business segment leaders to identify key program needs, resources and assist in the optimal allocation of resources and establishment of reasonable timelines.
· Maintain portfolio schedule, value and resource summary, and provide ongoing comparisons to plan as well as previous year’s performance. Identify potential obstacles and bottlenecks and provide possible solutions to senior management to allow for strategic decision-making from an overall business portfolio perspective.
· Assist in the development, implementation and improvement of New Product Introduction (NPI) models, data analysis methods, and portfolio/program management tools.
· Establish and maintain baselines, metrics and targets that enable assessment of Innovation and R&D productivity, effectiveness and efficiency across the Division. Ensure the integrity, timeliness and security of all pertinent data, information resources, documents and dashboards.
· Manage a team of program managers leading R&D programs for the business and mentor, train and coach direct reports on the proper use and application of program management models, methods and tools.
· May lead individual programs for the business where applicable.
Nature and Scope:
Develops and maintains good relationships with functional representatives to foster positive interactions and ultimately achievements of the desired project outcomes. Has frequent contact with all levels throughout the organization with respect to programs, projects, operational decisions, and scheduling requirements.
Manages direct reports to drive completion of key new product development goals, provide development and growth opportunities and ensure best practices.
Experienced in accomplishing results through technical professionals in a matrix environment.
Position exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Performs duties independently with minimal direction given on new projects. Works on complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Accuracy is required in performing all functions of this position. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional, business unit or divisional operations. This position interacts with all levels of personnel internally and in the community requiring the ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline, or the equivalent education and experience are required. M.B.A. and/or PMP certification a plus.
Experience:
Requires a minimum of 8 years relevant experience, including R&D, product development, project management, program management, portfolio management and direct supervision of staff. Must have experience working with product development teams. Background in life science industry strongly a must.
Key knowledge, skills & abilities in the following areas: · Excellent project/program management skills including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing programs/projects and priorities. Must have the ability to work independently to deliver on objectives is required.
· Experience in portfolio management, including financial modeling and decision analysis in the Life Sciences industry, preferably with life science reagents
· Independent ability to perform highly analytical and logical data analysis with strong customer focus and results orientation
· Knowledge of product development processes in the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry
· Excellent people and managerial skills, including the ability to work effectively with all levels of organization’s employees to facilitate small groups and gain cooperation from other teams and individuals without direct authority to assign tasks.
· The position requires strong initiative. Must possess self-motivation, enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
