An excellent career opportunity is currently available for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Off-Shore Piping Applications within UOP's Process Technology & Equipment (PT&E) business unit located in Des Plainest, IL.  
 
This Piping Engineering position will assume the primary liaison role with various outside Detailed Design firms and fabrication shops for off-shore projects. This includes accountability to technically evaluate bids, participate in the vendor selection process, detail design document review, and coordination with the fabricator throughout the fabrication phase of the project. Visits to shops and fabrication and erection sites are typically required for kickoff meetings, critical inspections, or witness points, and for providing consultation on design and fabrication along with feedback to improve future designs.



This Engineer works closely with all members of the project team including Piping Designers, Process and Controls Engineers, Equipment Engineers, Purchasing, and the Project Manager.
 
Position Responsibilities:
  • Design process equipment and piping per AMEX, ATM, & APIA for off-shore projects.

  • Perform and evaluate pipe stress analysis using CAESAR II or equivalent software.

  • Develop equipment & piping layouts and process flow diagrams, including piping line indices.

  • Perform hydraulic and heat transfer calculations.

  • Responsible for pipe support component selection and pipe support design criteria.

  • Consult with Sub-Contracted Detail Design firms on piping engineering concerns.

  • Review and comment on stress reports and construction level documentation.

  • Attend site visits to provide clarification and interpretations of drawings and specifications and troubleshoot piping support systems.

  • Develop project pipe class and pipe stress specifications suitable for off-shore applications.

  • Prepare requisitions for procurement of piping components vendor bids and contract documentation (POs).

  • Develop Insulation thickness tables and specifications using peplums software.

  • Administer quality management systems like ISO in work process.




Basic Candidate Requirements: 
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of piping design experience for off-shore project applications.

  • Minimum of 10 years professional work experience involving chemical plant and/or petroleum refinery piping applications required.

  • Minimum 5 plus years experience using applicable codes such as: ASME B31.3, ASME B16.5 and ASME Sections I & VIII, API and ANSI is required.

  • 5 plus years knowledge and experience in using CAESAR II Stress analysis software.

  • Ability to travel 10 %.

  • US Work Authorization. 

Additional Candidate Requirements: 
  • Masters Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is considered a plus.

  • Knowledge of AutoPipe and AutoPlant preferred. 

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experienced in the area of stress analysis for pressure vessels, piping systems or structural components.

  • Ability to thrive in a team based environment and have the ability to interact internally with engineers and sales personnel and externally with customers and subcontractors.

  • Fundamental understanding of MS Office suite (Particularly Excel and Word).
