Principal, Product Management - AmazonWireless

Role Summary:

Amazon.com's Wireless team is looking for an experienced product manager to own the product roadmap and business requirements for AmazonWireless, Amazon.com's new web site for cell phones and wireless service plans. Our team's goal is to build the best online shopping experience in the wireless industry. The Principal, Product Management for AmazonWireless has primary responsibility for ensuring the product roadmap will allow us to meet that goal.

There were 270 million wireless subscribers in the US at the end of 2008, and the cell phone is arguably the most pervasive electronic device in our everyday lives. Far from just phones, today's handsets increasingly function as MP3 players, cameras, GPS devices, and ultimately mobile computers. Massive smartphone adoption and increasing mobile network speeds have driven a virtual explosion in mobile web browsing, and increasing consumer demand for mobile applications and services is spurring the next wave of innovation and opportunity in the industry. Amazon is pushing forward aggressively to serve our customers in this critical technology space, and we need talent to help us realize our goals.

Role Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities for the Principal, Product Management of AmazonWireless are as follows:

• Defining a strategy and product roadmap to create the best online shopping experience for wireless products and services
• Communicating the strategy clearly through a business plan; forecasting the financial and operational implications of the plan accurately
• Creating buy-in for the strategic vision and product roadmap, both internally with Amazon.com senior executives and externally with external partners
• Negotiating with partners as required to achieve the vision, in conjunction with the Wireless retail team
• Leading the creation and definition of innovative business, product and customer experience concepts required to achieve the strategic vision, with the extended team of business managers, designers, technology managers, and cross-functional teams that will ultimately create and support the web site (e.g. operations, customer service, etc.)
• Maintaining the overall product and feature roadmap, and managing prioritization and trade-offs among customer experience, site performance and operational support load
• Writing complete and detail-oriented product requirements documents and ensuring clear communication exists with the business, design and development teams
• Leading cross-functionally to ensure we implement the business vision efficiently
• Proactively identifying and resolving strategic issues that may impair the team's ability to meet strategic, financial, and technical goals
• Serving as the primary business liaison to the wireless retail team; ensuring clear definition of roles and responsibilities with key retail and technology team members

Job Qualifications:

• 7+ years product management experience in a technological industry
• 3+ years experience in consumer-facing online commerce
• Wireless industry experience preferred
• Experience managing agile software development with scrum preferred
• Bachelor's degree required; MBA with product development concentration preferred

Required Skills:

• Strong strategic aptitude; proven ability to define a winning business strategy and product roadmap
• Excellent communication and persuasion skills; demonstrated success building buy-in for an innovative and bold strategic vision
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills; comfort with pro-forma financial and operational analysis and forecasting
• Implementation orientation; demonstrated ability to translate strategic differentiators into innovative and detailed product requirements
• Technical fluency; comfort understanding and discussing architectural concepts, schedule tradeoffs and new opportunities with technical team members
• Proven ability to make smart feature (customer experience) versus time-to-market trade-offs; experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions and assertions of business value
• Nimbleness and comfort with ambiguity; comfort responding quickly to rapidly evolving threats and opportunities
• Strong bias for action; ability to juggle multiple priorities and create a sense of urgency in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Street smarts; willingness to roll up the sleeves and do whatever is necessary to meet team goals
