Principal Software Engineer


Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Principal Software Engineer to join our IT department located at our Bedford, OH facility.  As a Principal Software Engineer, you will Partner with the business client community to analyze, recommend and provide technology solutions. As a subject matter expert, collaborate with IT, business clients, and/or solution providers to improve productivity and enhance processes in support of the client's business goals. Responsibilities will be technical leadership, project management, software design/development, and baseline support.

Responsibilities:
 
 
  • Perform second-tier help desk support by responding to client calls, troubleshooting, and resolving them in assigned business areas.

  • Creation of technical specifications, based on functional specifications, to insure that a high quality system/application is developed and deployed.

  • Provide user support and trouble shooting activities by conducting problem-solving analysis and implementing corrective actions in order to maintain business processes. Assist users with questions in extracting data/information from supported applications.

  • Position will make recommendations for development and software tools/technologies to assist with the development and support process.

  • Position partners with business to understand their needs and makes recommendations for new technology solutions to provide business enhancements.

  • Position will follow the system life cycle process including validation documents as applicable.

  • Maintain and enhance technical expertise in relevant application environments, programming languages and technologies as well as application software development techniques.

  • Training and knowledge transfer on lab technologies with peers and users.

  • Assist with formally and informally increasing the company’s combined knowledge of the tools.

  • Assist with the IT change control process and development of IT SOPs for supported applications.

  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours and weekends due to the expected interruptions that will occur from directly supporting users and applications.


    • Installation, configuration and support of externally developed software packages as well as support and enhancement of custom-written software.

    Requirements:


    • 5 to 7 years of development and support experience with laboratory information systems (such as LIMS, Chromatography system, Electronic Notebooks) and related devices.

    • Requires: Manufacturing or pharmaceutical / healthcare organization experience. 

    • Relevant database knowledge; Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server.

    • Familiarity with relational database fundamentals and concepts.

    • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications and solutions.

    • Strong interpersonal, verbal, writing, presentation and facilitation skills.

    • Strong analytical skills to comprehend existing business processes and related IT standards and requirements.

    • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Windows, MS Office Suite.

    • Bachelor degree in Science (Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science preferred) with relevant experience required

     
     
    Preferred Skills:
     

    • Solid understanding of GMP & GLP environment.Technical certifications in common quality applications and or IT technologies preferred

    • An MBA or advanced degree would be beneficial

    • Experience with Labware, Waters, Agilent products extremely beneficial.
