About the Job
General Purpose of this Position
A Product Engineer is the product expert for a specific area within the product line, serving as the escalation path for all issues related to the product, whether technical or otherwise. The Product Engineer functions as an extension of the development team by serving on their behalf to the entire theater team, including the technical force (Sales Engineers, Tech Support and Theater Product Managers) as well as the sales and marketing teams as well as the customer base itself.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Product Engineers are responsible for everything that encompasses the product line, serving as the true engineer for the product. They work the Product Management as well as the developers themselves to influence the direction of the product line, including any changes that need to be made, problems with the current product line and future direction of the organization as a whole. The engineer must have an intimate knowledge of the products they are responsible for to ensure that any changes made are easily recognized, documented and disclosed to the appropriate individuals.
The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serve as the product expert both within theater and around the world
- Understand basic, intermediate and complex functionality of all products within their specific discipline, including low level operation of the product
- Understand how to troubleshoot any and all problems that arise with specific products in discipline
- Test software, both pre and post release to attempt to find and resolve issues.
- Perform interoperability testing between TANDBERG and third party products
- Report and track all issues experienced with products, including those found internally as well as at customer locations.
- Provide prioritization list to R&D so issues are resolved properly and with the right priority
- Communicate changes in software to both internal and external customers
- Develop and deploy training material to educate entire technical organization as to the operation of the products
- Work with development team to influence and guide the future direction of the product line, including any strategic functionality that may need to be implemented for long term success
- Understand the needs of the market both on a short and long term basis to provide proper direction for future of product line
- Serve as technical escalation point for all issues within theater
- Develop and deploy utilities needed for the Product team directly – these utilities do not have a base or an existing product, but need to be developed from scratch
- Assist customers with deployment of many ‘soft’ features that require intimate knowledge of the procedures used to develop the TANDBERG product line
- Understand the strategic positioning for the product within the marketplace to assist sales and marketing with competitive analysis.
- Understand entire industry as a whole, including a detailed knowledge of competitive equipment and its operation.
- Learn new technologies as they are developed and their role in the future of communications
- Serve as liaison from R&D to the field, including NDA information, beta customers, soliciting feedback in usage, understanding customer deployments and potential issues, developing and deploying implementation strategies with customers on how to best use the products
Knowledge
It is expected that each product engineer will have the following knowledge at the beginning of employment:
- Intimate knowledge of innerworkings of ISDN networks and call routing
- Intimate knowledge of IP networks, including firewall, switches, routers
- Intimate knowledge of ITU standards, including H.323, H.320, H.225, H.245, etc
- Intimate knowledge of IETF standards, such as SIP, SDP, etc.
- Intimate knowledge of IIS, DNS, DHCP and Windows Server environments
- Intimate knowledge of TANDBERG product line, including development tasks used by R&D to deploy new software and products
- Intimate knowledge of world of visual communications, including third party competitor equipment
- Able to deploy a complex management network
- Able to troubleshoot issues when they arise on the most complex networks
- Must be able to diagnose issues that are not TANDBERG related
- Able to write code in various languages – needed for utility development
- Able to interface with a Microsoft SQL server from a development point of view
- Able to develop SQL scripts to gather information out of a centralized database
- Able to interpret and develop code to assist within integration customer deployments
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks at once, including self prioritization
- Must be able to develop documentation to outline technical notes and whitepapers
- Must have knowledge of SQL clustering

- Must be able to understand and interpret network sniffs to troubleshoot and resolve issues

- Must be able develop and present training material to all types of audiences
- Must be a fast learner, able to pick up detailed knowledge with little to no formal training

Education
Education should include a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline. Must have 4-5 years of experience within visual communications, including TANDBERG equipment.
Working conditions
50% lab work, 50% office work, some minor travel. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
