Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a R&D Project Manager who possesses a working knowledge of project management processes as they pertain to modern drug discovery and development programs.

The successful candidate will be innovative and yet highly methodical in his/her attentiveness to detail, with experience in the planning and management of successful biomedical research projects within a biotech or pharmaceutical company.
Responsibilities would emphasize the operational planning and scientific and logistical management of select early and mid stage drug discovery projects, through early clinical stage development.   This would include the meticulous tracking of progress for all internal and external activities, and the clear communication of this information to shareholders globally.  The ideal candidate will be a team player with highly evolved organizational, communicative and inter-personal skills, as they will need to work closely with the project leader to gain cooperation of cross-functional project teams through the early development phase.
The candidate will require well-developed skills for gaining the cooperation of others and brokering communication and harmony among team members, and will have a sense of urgency and commitment to meet highly aggressive timelines.

The Project Manager will be responsible for implementing and managing the appropriate processes to assist the team in effectively managing projects from discovery through early development by using the best tools available for project management.  This position reports to the Director of Project Management within the Strategic R&D Networks group.

  • Responsible for coordinating and preparing cross-functional project plans, and tracking all project and team information with a variety of project management tools.  The Project Manager will coordinate the compilation of elaborate, well-structured monthly reports and prepare clear, detailed minutes of all project meetings, for team and management reviews.  They will also be responsible for the methodical tracking of all action items, and be expected to find innovative ways to stay abreast of this multidimensional task.

  • Maintain constant communication with project leadership and all team members of the cross-functional drug discovery and early development teams so that all parties are aware of current project status, issues, contingencies, and milestones.

  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate the experience and foresight to proactively identify downstream project risks that may delay timelines and impede progress towards reaching goals, and will have the confidence, astuteness of mind, and communication skills, to make crisp, explicit recommendations for courses of action to keep project timelines, scope and cost on track.

  • The candidate will also be committed to educating the Project Team members on the drug discovery and early development processes and drug candidate status.

  • Interact and help bring the best practices of project management to the Project Management group.
