VPI has a great opportunity for a full-time Public Relations Specialist to join our team.  Our Corporate office is in Brea, North Orange County.


Summary:    This individual will support the creation and execution of public relations programs through news writing and administrative support and assist in the creation and execution of communications programs designed to educate the Company’s policyholder base.  Activities will be carried out independently and under the direction of the Senior Director, Corporate Communications, but following the guidance of the Senior Corporate Communications Specialist.


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


 



  1. Draft consumer news releases and miscellaneous public relations correspondence (including news alerts, press invites, non-profit donation letters, etc.).

  2. Participate in and contribute to public relations strategy and plan development.

  3. Research and mine VPI claims data in BI Reports, Renaissance and ImageRight to formulate news angles for press releases, fulfill news media requests, and facilitate proactive agency pitching efforts.

  4. Monitor, rate and input all media coverage and public relations activity into Web-based database and compile monthly media coverage reports, social media reports and publicity summaries, utilizing existing report templates.

  5. Monitor calls from media line and email communication sent to media info. email account, involving forwarding news media communications to Senior Corporate Communications Specialist and marketing correspondence to marketing department.

  6. Provide administrative support for the P.R. department, including posting news releases on company Web site, proofing press documents, etc.

  7. Using existing policyholder data, assist with securing applicable policyholders for press interviews and testimonials, and maintain/update policyholder testimonial database utilized by P.R. and marketing.

  8. Create and update various policyholder communications pieces (letters, forms, on-hold scripting, etc.).

  9. Provide writing support to copywriter for miscellaneous projects specific to existing and potential customer base (The Retriever newsletter, letters of correspondence, etc.).

  10. Update Right Now Web Customer Care information on Web site as needed.

Education/Experience:


 


Required:


Bachelors Degree in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing;  two to three years of experience in a public relations and/or corporate communications capacity; word processing skill of at least 40 words per minute; demonstrated ability of A.P. style (P.R.) and corporate communications writing; exceptional written, verbal, proofreading, and organizational skills; savvy phone communication skills; responsive follow up on assignments; ability to multi task; self starter; team player; professional.


 


Desirable:  A track record of versatile writing experience; a blend of both effective and concise news writing and persuasive marketing communications copy. Writing portfolios demonstrating this skill are a plus.


 


Language Ability:


Ability to read and interpret articles in consumer magazines, newspapers, and veterinary trade publications. Ability to integrate existing information into reports. News writing style ability or experience with journalistic style writing (ability to write a compelling press release) and the ability to create clear, concise and persuasive copy.  Conversational skills in Spanish a plus, but not required.


 


Math Ability:


Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


 


Reasoning Ability:


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


 


Computer Skills:


Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Web Mail, and Internet access. Power Point  and experience with database-type software a plus.


 


 


Physical Demands: The employee works within an office environment with moderate noise levels and temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous substances. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms.  The employee may be expected to lift, move and carry reports, publications and documents typically weighing 20 pounds or less. Finger dexterity is required for use of personal computer and standard office equipment.
