Overall responsibility of this position is to supervise the Inspection Department and coordinate inspection activities with a proactive commitment to safety and quality.  Initially, focus will be on analyzing and developing/re-developing systems, procedures and processes to improve our inspection process work flow.   Communicating expectations, motivating employees and holding them accountable will be critical in achieving success.  The efficiency and effectiveness of our Inspection Department has a significant impact on customer satisfaction, as well as overall plant performance.

Approximately 80% of the incumbent’s time will be spent in directing, controlling, delegating, reviewing, checking and eliminating ordinary difficulties, requiring the use of a wide range of procedures and the exercise of judgment in the analysis of facts and circumstances surrounding individual problems (within the scope of shift supervisory responsibilities) to determine what action should be taken, within the limits of standard practice.

The balance of the time will be spent in administrative work such as production records, inventory records, personnel records or in maintenance related activities.
 

Duties:

• Supervise, coordinate and provide guidance for Quality inspection personnel engaged in Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and Quality Control inspections.
• Develop, schedule, and implement inspection department training.
• Maintain Quality standards.
• Exercise discipline and good personnel relations involving application of company rules, regulations and other matters affecting their work.
• Under the guidance of the Quality Manager, this position is primarily responsible for maximizing cost effective Quality and production in accordance with established schedules.
• Work from schedules, orders, and instructions to assign work to the quality inspectors.
• Confer with Production Supervisors and Managers for special instructions and other information regarding schedules, material, equipment and personnel.
• Check work in process to insure adherence to quality and quantity standards.
• Keep the manufacturing department informed as to production progress and other pertinent information.
• Support on time delivery by review of job orders, scheduling required operational work as necessary to insure proper performance of duties and maintaining flow of work through the shop.
• Anticipate or investigate production delays, inadequate work performance and take necessary corrective action within limits of established policies.
• Make effective recommendations regarding equipment, maintenance, and subordinates.
• Work closely with Project Engineering, Quality Engineering and Manufacturing to ensure that all manufacturing and inspection activities are performed in compliance with process work document – Production orders.
• Attend production meetings
• Interview and test inspector candidates
  
• Consult with superior on critical problems, unusual conditions and situations.
• Act as a quality representative during audits – internal, customer and regulatory
• Provide and implement effective corrective action as required
• Act as an advocate for process improvement, streamlining and efficiency while maintaining quality program integrity

Requirements  

·         4 year undergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical degree

·         5+ years of quality and/or manufacturing experience

·         2+ years of supervisory experience with direct reports in a quality or manufacturing environment

·         4+ years of inspection experience

·         Must be a strong leader with a track record of results in the overall operations

·         Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.

·         Must be able to read customer drawings/specs and understand the principles of measurement.

·         Ability to independently measure, create and develop systems and processes to improve quality work flow.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Proactive commitment to safety
·         Ability to answer technical questions from shop, inspectors, and customers

·         Ability to apply product knowledge and technical skills to aid in problem solving with inspectors independently with minimum supervision

Additional preferred experience

·         Metallurgy, castings or metalworking experience

·         Background in Statistical Process Control, Six-Sigma and Lean Manufacturing.

·         Knowledge of statistical software (Statistical Process Control or Minitab)

·         Previous Llevel II and/or Level III certifications in Nondestructive Testing, in accordance with ASNT-TC-1A, to include Liquid Penetrant Inspection (FPI), Visual Examination, Radiography (X-ray) and Ultrasonic (UT) Examination. The greater the number of certifications, the more desirable the candidate would be.
