Quality Product Engineer

About the Job

Summary

 

Lead the engineering change process, protect product design, manage incoming component quality, and act as liaison with plant manufacturing, operations, design engineering and vendor personnel.  Position will require thorough product evaluation, assessment of customer impact, coordination and documentation of all product changes and trials, and analysis and problem solving of a variety of quality, production, and customer-related issues. 

 

 

Major Duties of Position

 

  • Enthusiastically support and contribute to GEMA’s World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Program and tools.
  • Interpret released engineering designs, specifications, materials and standards for plant manufacturing and engineering personnel.  Ensures that adequate and current records are maintained on drawings, bills of material, performance and process standards, product planning letters, specification summaries, engineering changes, master samples and related data for all GEMA products. 
  • Distribute and interpret product release data pertaining to all engineering designs and specifications.   
  • Protect product design intent and function while assisting with identification of solutions to manufacturing constraints. 
  • Ensure product engineering improvements developed by the partner companies are reviewed and possibly applied to World Engine designs.
  • Explore production, quality, and customer concerns, using PPSR and other advanced problem solving techniques (Shainin, DMAIC, Kaizen). Collect data as required, report on the root causes with supportive data, and recommend solutions to manufacturing operations and/or product engineering to correct the problem.    
  • Directly communicate with suppliers on internal quality issues.  Manage GEMA line protection through use of 3CPR, NCT and eCIMS systems. 
  • Proactively review supplier quality systems and validate corrective actions on internal and customer warranty issues related to supplied components.
  • Lead the tolerance rationalization process by identifying and/or evaluating tolerance relief requests, assessing alternative solutions, preparing the required data for product engineering review, define functional impact, develop and coordinate testing required to validate the tolerance relief, etc.   
  • Originate all required TSA requests, provide technical data required for product engineering buy off and signatures, coordinate validation testing as required, and evaluate resultant PPSR to insure permanent corrective action is adequate to kill the issue. 
  • May make studies and recommendations for future product improvements.
  • Create and maintain repair procedures associated with non-standard, non-close loop repair processes at GEMA and at the integrator facility as required.
  • Coordinate and schedule all special build requests insuring manufacturing and quality team buy in as required while minimizing the impact to the plant metrics. 
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement in the QE organization by benchmarking, evaluating others best practices, reviewing lessons learned, etc. and recommending impact changes to the GEMA QE organization.         
  • Enthusiastically support and contribute to GEMA’s World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Program.
  • Actively participate in GEMA’s employee suggestion program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or governed by customer requirements.
  • Actively participate in GEMA’s employee suggestion program – Innovation by Suggestion.

 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

 

·         Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or college.

·         3 - 5 years of progressively responsible engine engineering design or manufacturing experience

·         Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deal with a variety of people at all levels of the organization.

·         Ability to collect and synthesize data into meaningful information and communicate clearly to all levels of the organization.

·         Self-directed, team oriented with demonstrated planning/problem solving skills.

·         Advance problem solving skills preferred (Shainin Green belt, Six Sigma, etc.)

·         Experience and working knowledge of computer systems and software required.

·         Position’s location is Dundee, Michigan.  Some overseas travel required.

Working Environment

 

·         Normally an indoor manufacturing environment

·         Noise level is moderate to loud requiring hearing protection in certain areas on the floor

·         Safety glasses are required at all times on the production floor

·         Weekend/rotational work may be required

 

Organizational Alignment

 

      This position will report to directly to the Quality Engineering Lead.
