Radio Communications Technician - Long Island

About the Opportunity: Radio Communications Technician–Long Island ($28.43 per hour)

 

 

Experience the personal challenge of working for a world class organization and leader in the utilities and energy industry as a Radio Communications Technician for our Substation Protection and Telecommunications Operations Department located in Long Island, New York.  As a Radio Communications Technician, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM shift and remain flexible for occasional shift changes or overtime to support work requirements.

 

  • Work independently or with another Technician to perform the highest technical work associated with repair, test, maintenance and installation of complex communication and electronic equipment including two-way radio, microwave, satellite, wireless cell site and video facilities.  Perform all necessary tests and adjustments, submits written reports and test data sheets.

 

  • Investigates and corrects audio, radio, video and microwave interference complaints and follows up with such complaints.

 

  • Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of wireless remote controlled and data control systems.

 

  • Performs all types of work on communications equipment and other electronic equipment involving solid-state integrated circuit and computer technologies.

 

  • Must have a good working knowledge of basic principles of solid-state electronics and apply this knowledge by working with electronic and electrical diagrams and sketches in the installation of communications equipment.

 

  • Must have a valid FCC General Radio Telephone Operator's license and current knowledge of FCC rules, regulations and practices as pertaining to federally licensed systems used by the Company.

 

  • Recommends the purchase of materials and equipment and the establishment of spare parts' requirements.

 

  • Operates motor vehicles and/or equipment necessary to perform job duties. 

 

  • Performs other comparable duties, as well as, coordinates activities with other departments or sections.

 

  • Must be able to perform the duties outlined above in shop or outside field conditions from a ladder or aerial lift device.  May be required to perform work at up to 200 feet above the ground on utility/communication structures in an aerial platform under various weather conditions.  Must be able to work in aerial lift device as required to maintain or install wireless communications equipment on towers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Two years of college in electronics or equivalent required.

 

  • 6 1/2 years of practical hands-on experience as a Radio Technician trouble shooting and repairing two-way mobile, portable and base station radio communications electronics. 

 

  • Applicants must possess a valid FCC General Radio Telephone Operator License. 

 

  • Possession of a valid / clean New York State motor operator's license required.

 

  • In addition to possessing the qualifications for this vacancy, candidates selected will be expected to work overtime in accordance with departmental requirements and to participate in the Company's Emergency Restoration Program as may be required.
  • Candidates are required to pass a written screening exam administered by National Grid and additional testing may be administered based upon the requirements of the position.
