Southside Virginia Training Center (SVTC), a residential facility located near Petersburg, VA, is recruiting for a Recreation Therapist & a Recreation Therapist Senior. SVTC’s primary mission is to provide quality, person-centered health and habilitative services to individuals with intellectual disabilities. In pursuing the person-centered approach, staff from various disciplines work as a team with the individual and his/her authorized representative to address the individual needs, goals, choices and preferences.
The Recreation Therapist: evaluates the skills, abilities and interests of individuals to determine their individual/therapeutic needs; serves as consultant and liaison on matters related to recreation and leisure supports; develops and oversees implementation of therapeutic and individualized outcome based plans; provides opportunities for individuals to participate in activities on and off campus; coordinates through the Unit Program Director the use of Welfare Budget and PFA funds for ordering and securing therapeutic and age appropriate materials and equipment for programs and activities; and serves as member of the Personal Support Team for assigned individuals.
Requirements: Must have: strong program development skills; experience with therapeutic recreational activities, assessment and program implementation for individuals with intellectual /developmental disabilities; the ability to work independently and within a team setting; and a valid driver’s license.
A B.S. /B.A. degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Therapy is preferred. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification preferred; and experience developing and monitoring program supports for special populations is also preferred.
The Recreation Therapist Senior: provides planning, coordination, and evaluation of Recreation Therapy Departmental Supports for SVTC supports; is responsible for supervising the activities of professional and para-professional staff in the provision of recreation/leisure supports; develops and implements training modules, assesses staff training needs, assists in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budget and serves as consultant and liaison on matters related to reaction and leisure supports. As Personal Support Team (PST) member, the Recreation Therapist Senior: evaluates the skills, abilities and interests of individuals to determine their individual/therapeutic needs; develops and oversees implementation of therapeutic and individualized outcome based plans; provides opportunities for individuals to participate in activities on and off campus; and coordinates through the Unit Program Director the use of Welfare Budget and PFA funds for ordering and securing therapeutic and age appropriate materials and equipment for programs and activities.
Requirements: Must have: Strong supervisory and program monitoring skills; knowledge of therapeutic recreational activities, their development and implementation for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities; the ability to manage employees, work independently and within a team setting; and a B.S. /B.A. degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Therapy. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation Therapy Certification is also required.
Experience with management of professional and para-professional staff, experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities/developmental disabilities in therapeutic recreational activities, and experience developing and monitoring program supports for special populations is preferred. A valid driver’s license is a plus.
