DescriptionUnder the direction of the Executive Director of Clinical Services and Chief of Radiology, perform and technically interpret a variety of ultrasound scans of the head and neck region to measure and evaluate disease conditions. Interprets the technical ultrasound data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care (or services) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the department.  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients requirements relative to his/her age specific needs.
2. Interpret ultrasound request forms to determine study technique, based on clinical information provided by referring physicians.
3. Evaluation of a thyroid mass/hyroid module, evaluation of neck lesions, including neck lumps, lymph nodes, modules, and cysis.  Infections of lymph nodes, congenital cysts including thyroglossal duct cysts and branchial cleft cysts, as well as the evaluation of neck pain and lymph node enlargement.  Evaluation of neck pain and lymph node enlargement.  Evaluation of salivary gland disease, including infections, stones, gland nodules/lesions, and inflammatory disorders of the salivary glands (e.g. Sjogren's), and color Doppler.
4. Evaluates clarity and accuracy of ultrasound data.  Refers complex or unusual cases to the radiologist.
5. Selects appropriate images to document the clinical questions addressed on the requisition form.
6. Selects images to reflect incidental findings that may be clinically relevant.
7. Provide a summary of findings to the radiologist to aid in patient diagnosis and management.
8. Use independent judgment and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
9. Maintains infection control policies with regard to cleanliness of equipment and environment of the ultrasound area.
10. Particpates in professional organizations, training and activities to maintain currency in the field of ultrasonography.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
RequirementsKnowledge of head and neck ultrasonography.  Typically acquired through specialized training equal to two years of college for which the individual has received education and clinical experience in and has demonstrated competency.

Must be a registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS).

Vasular experience a plus.
