Purpose of the Position
The Regional Safety Manager will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the work environment of their assigned branches and region in order to ensure compliance with OSHA and related regulations. This team member plans, develops, administers, and manages organizational safety policies, programs, and training programs for multiple facilities within a multistate geographic area. Under the direction of the Director of Safety, the incumbent will investigate accidents and conduct inspections of facilities, fleet, equipment, and working conditions to monitor compliance with safety standards, legal requirements, and organizational policies.
Major Responsibilities
- Manages and coordinates activities of safety program
- Communicates and helps to develop accident-prevention programs for incorporation into operational policies of the organization
- Identifies and appraises conditions and hazards that could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents
- Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and accidents and prepares reports for information of personnel concerned
- Devises methods to evaluate safety program and conducts or directs evaluations
- Studies incident trends and works with the Safety Department to develop action plans to address the trends
- Directs and coordinates activities of operations department to obtain optimum use of equipment, facilities, and personnel
- Coordinates safety activities of unit managers to ensure implementation of safety programs throughout organization
- Coach and counsel regional staff on behavioral safety techniques
- Train and educate branch managers and supervisorial staff
- Conduct street inspections to ensure compliance
Other Duties
- Maintains liaison with outside organizations, such as fire departments, mutual aid societies, and rescue teams to assure information exchange and mutual assistance
- Evaluates technical and scientific publications concerned with safety management and participates in activities of related professional organizations to update knowledge of safety program developments
- Serve as point person to coordinate branch response to all compliance enforcement activity within regional territories
Required Education, Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree Required
- Certified Safety Professional or similar designation
- 5+ years in a Safety or Managerial role with experience coaching and leading a team
- Experience Managing OSHA & DOT Compliance preferred
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships at all organizational levels
- Ability to develop constructive relationships with key regional personnel and branch personnel to obtain their support and involvement in safety accountability
- Must have the ability to overcome operational challenges, challenge the way it’s always been done, and introduce new & cost effective processes & techniques
- Ability to interface, influence, and effectively manage supervisors and drivers in class and one-on-one situations
- Must have conflict management skills and the ability to tactfully address classroom challenges from opinionated students
- Ability to facilitate proactive safety awareness programs
- Ability to present statistical data to all organizational levels
- Ability to instruct and train others, evaluate and plan the work of others, and act on employee problems
- Working Knowledge of Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Word
- Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT and EPA regulatory requirements
- Knowledge of federal and state safety laws and the ability to identify and evaluate workplace hazards
- Must have a critical eye for detail, and, have the ability to communicate issues factually
Working Conditions
- This position requires frequent trips to assigned branches
- This position requires the ability to feel comfortable being around guns and coworkers that carry weapons
- This position will spend approximately 20% of time in the office and 80% of the time out in the field
- This position requires air travel & driving in traffic on a frequent basis

- This position may require traveling in a car in order to follow & analyze truck procedures

- Approximately 65% Travel Required
