The Laboratory of Molecular Technology is a high throughput genetics and genomics laboratory providing cutting edge technologies to the National Cancer Institute. Responsible for performing core support in the high throughput Sanger sequencing pipeline, including sample handling, quantification, purifications, cycle sequencing, cloning, and capillary electrophoresis using Applied Biosystems platform. Responsible for documenting results for a variety of projects to the supervisor on a daily basis. All projects are of a highly specialized nature and require technical proficiency and judgment. Responsible for all ongoing daily activities, maintenance of equipment, use of CLIA protocols/logbooks/databases, sequence chromatogram quality control, and trouble-shooting of problems with direct coordination of supervisor. Requires the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols. May involve some aspects of mutation detection (PCR optimizations, gel chip electrophoresis).
REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years related biomedical experience. Knowledge of basic subject matter - molecular biology tools for traditional Sanger sequencing- including basic sterile and PCR amplification laboratory techniques. Computer proficiency is a must. Ability to organize reagents and samples for sophisticated automated high-throughput analysis in support of genomic and diagnostic studies. Two years proven experience in DNA sequencing, data review, and stringent record keeping. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
DESIRED SKILLS: Experience in a DNA and/or sequencing laboratory. Experience with column/enzymatic purifications and laboratory automation. Work in a core/service facility. General computer experience. Also experience with data analysis software utilized in genomics and cancer genetics. General knowledge of molecular based biology and course work in the biological sciences. Experience working in a CLIA-certified laboratory.
