The Research and Development Manager is responsible for developing new products from concept to commercialization that support company growth. Serves as a technical expert that supports product improvements, quality improvements, customer requests, cost savings initiatives, and assistance in the efficient utilization of the manufacturing network. Primary responsibility will be to apply basic food technology skills by leading projects that impact the production facility.
MAIN DUTIES:
- Anticipate our customer’s needs and respond to their requests by developing new innovative options using our core products/processes or consistent with our core technologies.
- Manage technical product development projects with customer’s team.
- Develop platform technologies based on extensions of existing technologies.
- Work with the manufacturing facilities to ensure quality standards and improvement/maintenance issues are handled correctly and within the timeframe required.
- Work closely with marketing to drive incremental growth.
- Provide technical input and training with operations, management, and sales/marketing to ensure completion of company objectives.
- Identify new product opportunities for Ralcorp through networking with customers and suppliers in affiliated industries.
- Effectively design and document details of experiments: objectives of test, accurate formulas and costing, processing conditions, required equipment and equipment setup, results, and recommended next steps.
- A flexible schedule is required to support testing as necessary. Occasionally, plant tests must be conducted during off shifts or even on weekends.
- Apply Food Science and Human Nutrition education and skills to assigned work.
- Develop specifications, formulas, and nutrition labeling.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES: - Excellent understanding of food science and technology principles, and ability to apply them in product development and commercialization.
- Excellent culinary skills and ability to work with baked goods.
- Strong written and oral communications skills.
- Strong presentation skills both to external and internal contacts.
- Must be well balanced between the strategic view of the work and the execution aspects of the job.

Job Qualifications
EDUCATION: BA/BS Degree in Food Science or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 10 years of food product development with at least 5 in baked goods.
