Department Description: PPAL (Pervasive Platforms and Architectures Lab) focuses on the development of software platform technologies for distributed and pervasive computing across home, mobile and enterprise. The department currently has active projects in distributed content management, peer-to-peer multimedia, social media and search, advanced Android platforms, and advanced advertising. The work environment is high-energy and strongly oriented towards systems building and research. PPAL is part of the Applied Research & Technology Center (ARTC) at Motorola in Schamburg, IL.
Responsibilities/Expectations: A lot of the work at the PPAL focuses on system building, consisiting of both exploratory and more product-aligned development. Tackling bleeding edge systems-related problems of business value to Motorola is the primary goal, with realization ranging from more abstract research all the way to advanced prototyping work. Applicants must possess in-depth problem solving skills with the ability to analyze and devise algorithms as well as the ability to architect and prototype new solutions. Applicants would be involved in a mix of research and prototyping with a specific focus on software platforms. The candidate is also expected to be a self-starter who enjoys exploring new technologies and has the entrepreneurial ability to collect environmental as well as business inputs into structured, focused problem statements.
Knowledge Skills: The candidate is expected to have breadth and depth in distributed systems technologies with a solid grounding in leading edge platform technologies and web services. A strong knowledge of distributed systems is required, with preference given to candidates with a background in distributed caching, distributed file systems, and other aspects of distributed content handling architectures. Other areas of experience that are desirable include embedded computing, peer-to-peer systems, behavioral privacy and market-based systems. Strong object oriented programming and design skills are a requirement. 2+ years of industry experience with consumer domains and in content related industries is preferred but not required.
