We’re looking for someone who isn’t just a technical/operational SQL DBA. We need someone that has done query tuning or query/database design experience and not someone that has only managed third-party databases that couldn’t be touched.
- We want someone who can tune queries by refactoring them rather than throwing indexes at them, rethink the way data is stored to improve retrieval speed or reduce space usage, and analyze the way an application uses data to suggest ways that it could do so more efficiently.
- Someone who knows when to use a temp table vs. a variable table, when a table is too big to delete from and how you can work around that, when you should denormalize, what would cause a query not use an index, and who can help developers improve the performance of the SQL they’ve already written.
- I need someone who knows more about designing data structures and storing and retrieving data than my C# developers. It’s easy to backup and restore databases, investigate job failures, look at an execution plan to see what indexes might improve it, and run sp_who to see what’s blocking.
- I need someone with those basic operational skills who is also a first-rate database developer and can handle big projects like implementing replication.
- For something like implementing replication, I am less concerned with whether the person has done it before than whether they have the capacity to research it, quickly develop expertise in the gotchas and potential pitfalls, and see through an implementation and deployment.
